Description

If container-grown, lay the tree on its side and remove the container. Loosen the roots around the edges without breaking up the root ball too much. Position tree in center of hole so that the best side faces forward. You are ready to begin filling in with soil. Another benefit of these pots is that the slots facilitate good drainage all around the pot, and this is particularly important if you wanted to use the pots for hardwood cutting propagation. Watering Cans: Whether you choose plastic of galvanized makes no difference, but do look for generous capacity and a design that is balanced when filled with water. A 2 gallon can (which holds 18 lbs. of water) is preferred by most gardeners and is best suited for outdoor use. Indoor cans should be relatively smaller with narrower spouts and roses (the filter head).

Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole. If your soil is poor, mix 50% of the original soil with 50% high quality compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. Aftercare Advice for Chamaecyparis Ellwood’s Gold trees Deciduous refers to those plants that lose their leaves or needles at the end of the growing season. Most conifers like an open sunny position, but there are conifers suitable for most positions. See our guides to conifers (and other plants) for wet soils, sandy soils, clay soils and chalky soil. Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its noteworthy qualitiesThe ideal time to plant all conifers is late Oct and early November or March. However, anytime between autumn and early spring, whenever your soil isn’t waterlogged or frozen is also a great choice. Avoid those showing signs of stress or disease (yellowing or browning of foliage), or damage, like those with broken branches Hedges — conifers make good hedges, when choosing plants for a hedge take into account the rate of growth and eventual height to ensure plants don’t outgrow the space available. Conifer hedges especially fast growing cultivars need regular maintenance and won’t tolerate clipping into old wood. See our list of conifers for hedgesfor suggestions Our pot grown Chamaecyparis Ellwood’s Gold can be planted at any time of the year. Firstly, remove weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole, then dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. To help Ellwood’s Gold establish more effectively, we advise applying Mycorrhizal fungi (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil. We have one of the widest range of trees in the UK, and for those plants which we cannot despatch next day we will normally despatch within 4 weeks. The despatch time for different products will be confirmed when products are added to your shopping basket

A few conifers such as yew and Thuja, can be pruned hard and will regrow. Most conifers will not regrow from old wood if you prune into it, so take care. At around 1 metre tall, these multi-stemmed Chamaecyparis topiary pom pom trees offer great value for money. Commonly known as Elwood's Gold, False Cypress and Lawson's Cypress.

The variety Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii is a slow-growing, large to medium evergreen shrub with a conical habit. It boasts beautiful bluish-green young foliage borne in short, soft sprays. The foliage matures to a grey-green hue and takes on a steely blue shade in the winter. This stunning conifer variety was found in 1915 by G. Ellwood of Swanmore Park UK. Its still popular today, a testament to its many qualities. Holder of the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by Royal Horticultural Society. Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required. Removing weeds as soon as they appear is a good way of ensuring that valuable moisture is not lost. Mulching also reduces moisture loss from the top layers of soil. Newly planted conifers need very careful watering during the initial stages. They are drought proof once established and should not need too much watering, but they are very vulnerable to stress from drought if they are not watered thoroughly.

Container-grown conifers can be planted at any time of year, but avoid planting during hot or dry weather unless you are prepared to water well Fill both holes with soil the same way. Never amend with less than half original soil. Recent studies show that if your soil is loose enough, you are better off adding little or no soil amendments. Young plants need extra phosphorus to encourage good root development. Look for a fertilizer that has phosphorus, P, in it(the second number on the bag.) Apply recommended amount for plant per label directions in the soil at time of planting or at least during the first growing season. No gardener depends 100% on natural rainfall. Even the most water conscious garden appreciates the proper hose, watering can or wand. Chamaecyparis (sometimes referred to as False Cypress) is often used for topiary or the Japanese art of Niwaki (nurturing trees to grow into a particular shape). This is a slow-growing conifer with a naturally compact and dense shape. Despite their striking looks, these topiary pom pom trees are low maintenance, needing a trim at most twice per year.

Water when normal rainfall does not provide the preferred 1 inch of moisture most plants prefer. Average water is needed during the growing season, but take care not to overwater. The first two years after a plant is installed, regular watering is important. The first year is critical. It is better to water once a week and water deeply, than to water frequently for a few minutes. If you are keen to grow native plantsthere are three conifers native to the British Isles - common juniper ( Juniperus communis), Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris) and yew ( Taxus baccata) Honey fungus could also occur as a result of waterlogging, or if it is already present on the plant or in the garden. It is the most destructive fungus in Britain, and unfortunately the only treatment is evacuation and burning of affected plant material. Unlike other hardwood plants, conifers need very little pruning. However, if green branches appear in trees with coloured or variegated foliage, these should be pruned more often.
