The path of the acoustic reflex is relatively short. Sound travels through the middle ear to the cochlea, then travels through the auditory nerve to brainstem (the ventral cochlear nucleus->superior olive->facial nerve neurons), and then through the facial nerve to the stapedius muscle. Nonetheless, the prevalence of coinciding TTTS symptoms in hyperacusis patients is important. Those who have developed hyperacusis may find some comfort in having several of their symptoms described as a product of TTTS. As for the “standard” tonics (rather than premium or diet), almost all are sweetened with a mixture of sugar and artificial sweetener, generally sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K or saccharin. Not only are they cheaper than sugar, but they now avoid that sugar levy. On flavour grounds, this is often bad news.
