They’re cheap, efficient, and extremely eco-friendly. They burn low on smoke, do not emit unsafe gases, and do not give off creosote. On top of that, they’re much easier to store and handle than both wood logs and coal. So what is a briquette? How are the various types different from one another? And are they the right choice for you?

Woodlets Briquettes are certified Ready to Burn and they comply with the Clean Air Act – in fact, they exceed it! This also means they’re suitable to use in Smokeless Zones on DEFRA-approved appliances. Charcoal briquettes are the only type of briquette Lekto experts advise buyers to avoid. This is because regular lumpwood charcoal is superior to them in almost any way. A stove fan can be installed tool-free in just a few seconds. All you have to do to install them is to put them on top of your wood-burning stove, with the fans facing the part of the room you want to move the heat to. The briquette pieces weigh between 0.5 and 1kg, and are perfect for small stoves and open fires. Generating excellent heat with an attractive flame, you can expect an active burn time of 1.5 – 2 hours. The rounded square shape is practical and popular because it stops the heat log from rolling on the fire. Because they’re easy to break they can be used on all sizes of stove or open fire. Perfect for:

But not all briquettes are made equal. Some are easier to light. Some burn hotter. And some can help save you hundreds of pounds on wood heating. The briquettes are designed to burn long and slow - for up to eight hours when used correctly - giving you cosy warmth throughout. On average, this is up to four times longer than conventional logs and briquettes. Each chunky log weighs around 2.5kg, so they’re great for bigger stoves. For smaller stoves, just break them into half before using. This is easy to do, – break them by sharply tapping two of the heat logs together. They’re very highly compressed, so they produce no dust and this density helps them burn for several hours. Best of all, they also produce huge amounts of heat with an attractive flame. They expand by about 20% as they burn, so place them across the firebox and just use small amounts until you’re confident with their burning characteristics on your particular stove or fire. Another benefit of briquettes is their low moisture content. Briquettes typically have a moisture content of less than 10%. This means that they produce less smoke and particulate matter when burned, which makes them a cleaner-burning option that is better for both indoor and outdoor environments. None of our briquettes contain additives or chemicals. Made from pure, untreated wood sawdust, WillowWarm Briquettes are held together by compression alone.

In his never-ending quest to cost-optimize the automobile assembly process, Ford turned to charcoal briquettes as a form of cheap fuel for his factories. Coffee Logs are an unique product, made in England from waste coffee grounds mixed with sawdust from local sawmills. The coffee grounds are collected from cafes, offices, factories, universities etc throughout the UK, repurposing a waste product. A great example of this are Night Briquettes. Made from a proprietary mix of sustainably sourced softwood bark, Night Briquettes can burn for an incredible 8 hours and require absolutely no tending. This being said, briquettes can be made from virtually any form of combustible biomass, including most types of agricultural (and even municipal) waste. When energy would become cheap again, briquettes would be squeezed out of the market by cheap hydrocarbons. 21st Century Briquettes I know there is some controversy on whether peat should be burned at all, as it isn't the most sustainable fuel. I hear Bord Na Mona will soon seize all operations on harvesting peat. This aside, as mentioned, I have a big batch of it. Willow is a Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) perennial crop, which means that once harvested, the crop is regrown. While most other crops must be ploughed, re-planted, or re-seeded on an annual basis, willow has a lifespan of about 36 years. Thus, once planted, willow provides 36 years of continuous crop production without the need for annual ploughing, re-seeding, or re-planting. Instead, it is simply re-harvested every two years, and the cycle continues, making it a sustainable option for wood fuel. Burning characteristics:

Giving out a steady heat with a nice flame, these are really easy-to-use-briquettes. They burn for around two to three hours depending on airflow and give off good heat for the duration of their burn time. Perfect for: This being said, high-quality heat logs can indeed be used in smoke-free areas, provided you burn them in an appliance approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Can you burn sawdust briquettes in a wood burner? The term RUF briquettes is used synonymously with heat logs and briquettes. Where did the name 'RUF briquettes' come from? It depends on your stove. Most wood-burning stoves are not made with peat briquettes in mind. Some may even come with warnings telling you only to burn wood in them. In general, you want to burn peat briquettes in multi-fuel stoves. How to burn peat briquettesWith wood fuel prices rising all over the country, people are once again taking an interest in wood briquettes. And for a good reason. When compared to traditional wood logs, briquettes: a) have a far higher energy density, b) burn for a longer time, and c) are more affordable per kilowatt of heat produced.
