Samsung encourages comparisons with OLED TVs, given most OLED sets aren’t as slim as the marketing suggests. At 25.9mm, it will pretty much sit flush against a wall, but LG has gazumped Samsung’s Neo QLEDs with a depth of 23.1mm. Performance is equally competitive when upscaling from 1080p. The sweeps over the Canary Islands in Fast & Furious 6 in HD on Blu-ray show off the Samsung’s strength of colour. The grasses, the sea, the reds and purples of the blooming flowers all make you want to retire to some far-away paradise. The Sony is probably a tiny bit richer at that red end of the spectrum and warmer on the yellows, but Samsung wins on the cooler shades. Every inch of the TV has been designed to remove all distractions. With next to no frame around the screen, you're left with only the beautiful picture to enjoy. Plus, it's easy to hide TV wires from sight with cable management. Under the TV’s skin is a new version of Samsung Quantum Processor, called the Neo Quantum Processor 4K. The big new feature here is referred to as Ultra Precision Light Driving, which involves more precise dimming and a local power distribution feature that sends power to the brightest areas of the picture and away from the darker parts. It also works in conjunction with a sensor integrated into the TV's frame to adjust brightness and contrast in response to ambient lighting conditions. There’s a new level of ‘deep learning’ applied to contrast enhancement, too.

Samsung has moved its branding towards the side to firm up the set’s minimalist tastes, while the bezel that frames the screen gives full prominence to the images the TV (spoiler alert) rather wonderfully creates. The result is a 4K HDR picture that we find a little more exciting than the similarly priced Sony A80J during bright scenes. Sony’s OLED is only a hair behind on dark detail and doesa little bit better at shading some scenes, but there’s still enough skill in the QN94A to give us a very three-dimensional feel as our hero climbs up the inside of the tall turbine tower. Samsung offers a choice of Dynamic, Natural, Standard, Movie and Filmmaker picture modes. The latter two are the most accurate with little, if any, difference between them.Feel like you're in the middle of the action with directional, realistic sound that projects from speakers built into all sides of the TV. Never miss a beat with minimized blur and enhanced motion clarity, and catch all the fast-moving action whether you're watching sports or taking advantage of newer Next-Gen gaming capabilities. The same effortless balance is applied in regards to detail and sharpness, too. Where some TVs, including previous Samsung models, can over-sharpen edges and details, giving everything an artificially etched look, the QN95A ensures that everything is crisp and clearly defined without any of that exaggeration. The detail is all there, but it isn’t rammed down your throat, and that’s the way it should be.

Another year, another Samsung QLED – and another very similar-looking TV. While it’s all-change internally, the outward appearance is virtually identical to previous models. It’s another high-quality, minimalist set built to the highest standards. Samsung doesn’t support Freeview Play, but all the UK catch-up apps are present. While Samsung hasn’t gone down that route for the QN94A, it does seem to have responded to the challenge. The audio from this TV is a significant improvement on previous seasons. It’s as nigh-on perfect for app support as you’re going to find. All that’s missing is Sky Store, BT TV, Twitch, VLC and TuneIn, but these aren’t serious concerns. As far as major streaming services and catch-up platforms go, it’s a full house – and in 4K HDR wherever that’s possible.

I’m less convinced about its ‘Picture Clarity’ motion processing. Samsung doesn’t offer a wealth of options: simply Auto, Custom and Off.
