I am making this sound a little more bleak than it probably really is, but something about 2/3's of the way into this book inspired me to a not so good feeling depression.

I can't quite describe my feeling, but this story brought back time when I personnally enjoyed autumn and its transition, the grey skies, the rain, the winds and colder evenings. The whole world was craving for more Moomin, and yet, this last novel became a Moomin book devoid of Moomins. Mymble never dreamed, she slept when she felt like it and woke when there was anything worthwhile waking up for.

That story saw the restless patriarch taking his brood away from the valley and off to an exposed lighthouse, apparently for good. Some of the more sad and wistful passages seem particularly meant for older readers, though there is no reason why children cannot identify with them as well.Toft finds an old microbiology textbook, and misinterpreting it as a story, creates a monster in his imagination known as the Creature, which appears to develop a life of its own.

The book also felt unique to me for its Scandinavian qualities: the strange sprite-like creatures, woodland settings and short winter days, and the slight air of depression. Odjavna pesma finsko-japanskog animea „Mumijevi” u bosanskohercegovačkoj sihronizaciji započinje stihom: „Kad sunce zađe mrak te snađe” - neočekivano melanholično za odjavnu špicu crtanog filma o veselom životu i nežnim priključenijima trolova koji nalikuju na nilske konje (ne, oni nisu nilski konji, postoji čitava jedna epizoda posvećena ovom problemu). At the centre of Jansson’s Moomin books stands the Moominhouse, the bustling hub of a loose-knit community of strange creatures: adopted family members, fleeting visitors, wandering philosophers and troublesome hangers-on. He was hunting for Moomintroll’s goodbye letter, which had to be somewhere because a moomintroll never forgets to say good-bye. I, too, lived in a home that, like the Moominhouse, was at one and the same time both draughty and expansive.

All of these characters have their own fears and thoughts that are intensified in the cold and lonely house.

At first he’s grumpy and depressed by having to live with the imposter family, but salvation comes when he helps Fillyjonk discover the music within her. It is November, the days are closing in, and no one knows where the Moomins have gone and when they might come back. In the United States the series beginning with Finn Family Moomintroll (first published in English in 1945) has accumulated generations of fans.Where previously there had been action and interaction in her lively drawings, here there is a stately isolation.
