These are genuinely cult items. I remember taking a pair when I flew Virgin Atlantic Upper Class in the late 1990’s, and very few trends in the aviation industry survive that long. That said, the quality has dropped – my set is metal whilst they are now made out of plastic. Caution While Pouring: The holes on top of the shakers are nice and large, so you'll have no problem pouring salt/pepper out of them. If you have finely grained salt, the shakers may pour out faster than some people are used to. If you like really salty food, great! Just hold the shaker upside down and let the rapid stream of salt shower over your dinner. If not, I'd recommend holding the shaker sideways (not angled too far downward) and gently shaking it to get a more controlled amount. One of the highlights of flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is getting your very own Wilbur and Orville salt and pepper set.

To return faulty items see our Returning Faulty Items policy. Caution While Filling: The shakers are filled by pouring the salt/pepper into a small hole in the base of the shakers (covered by a rubber stopper). This means, of course, you have to turn the shakers almost or fully upside-down while you're pouring... I'll give you three guesses as to what happens next. My roommate started pouring salt into the salt shaker, and it took him several seconds to remember that gravity works and realize that salt was pouring right out of the top holes and accumulating on top of the counter. We had a good laugh about it, but we were able to resolve the issue by covering the top of the shaker while filling it, so that no salt would escape. (He took a paper towel folded over a few times to place over and cover the holes, then held the shaker / paper towel in his palm in one hand while pouring with the other.) Nerdy but Tasteful: The design of these are quite nice. They are shaped and painted to look unmistakably like droids, but the design is subtle enough that the pieces still look and feel like "normal" salt and pepper shakers. This makes them cute but not kitschy, and they don't stand out like a sore thumb among the other fancy items in our kitchen. So, this is a great option if you don't want something over-the-top. (As a contrast, my roommate was telling me about how he once got a Star Wars toaster. After the initial humor wore off, he eventually got tired of every single piece of toast he ever made having the words "Star Wars" printed on it. His toaster now sits in an attic somewhere.)
