According to Skinny Medic, if he could only choose one emergency compression bandage to work with, a 6-inch OLAES would be it. A Belgian medical equipment distributor bought the first bandages in 1998. [1] Bar-Natan, having grown the company to a profitable entity, later sold it to PerSys Medical in Houston, Texas, the company that first introduced the bandage to the US military. Today 1.5 to 2 million bandages are produced and sold each year. Apply pressure to the bleed: Before you attempt to unwrap the Israeli bandage, begin applying pressure with your hand. Then, you can pass that job off to a partner, your knee, or (if the patient is able) ask the patient to hold pressure while you prepare the bandage. It doesn’t do you much good to have an IBD yet not know how to use it! I highly recommend purchasing one you can open and train with so that you know what to do without hesitation when it matters most. There are many bandage options to choose from, one that many people opt for is the old faithful Emergency Bandage, also known as the Israeli bandage, manufactured by PerSys Medical.

Non-adherent - eliminates the risk of causing pain or re-opening the wound on removal of the bandage Gauze pad: The Israeli bandage has an attached gauze pad - basically, a five-by-nine pad sewn into the elastic band. The “H” is not face down into the wound — it faces you, sitting on top of the wound. “Today’s bandage, kids, is brought to you by the letter ‘H’!” The story begins at 1984 when Bernard Bar-Nathanwas in training to become an Israeli military medic in 1984.He noticed that the bandages issued for bleeding control had been manufacturedin the 40s', and haven'tbeen redesigned since. In the training he was taughtto grab a stone and to use it to apply pressure to a wound that would not clot on its own, he thought that the bandage should have a pressure bar built in the bandage itself.Bar-Nathan started developing a new more effective bandage that will save crucial time during injuries. In 1990–1991, the idea and the design were developed enough to apply for Israeli Government support from the Office of the Chief Scientist in the Ministry of Industry. The application allowed Bar-Natan to become a part of a technology incubator program in Jerusalem’s Har Hotzvim, with a government grant covering 3/4 of the expenses connected to the research and development of the bandage. After three additional years of development the bandage was ready for commercialization. However, Bar-Natan formed First Care Products Ltd and supervised the design and production of the bandage. David Kleinman, a SWAT team medic who devised a first aid kit used to treat victims of the 2011 Tucson shooting, said that "deputies reached for the Emergency Bandage 'over and over at the scene'" of the shooting. [4] History of development [ edit ] The Emergency Trauma Bandage AKA Israeli Bandage, consolidates numerous treatment equipment into a single unit and provides one device:

Hemostatic agents are available as loose, granular substances that can be poured directly into a wound. Many of them resemble cat litter (which won't work). The loose substances are fine if you want to carry them separately. We recommend a bandage with the hemostatic agent infused into the bandage material. Secondary Sterile Dressing. Keeping the wound area clean and maintaining the pad and pressure on the wound firmly in place, including immobilization of the injured limb or body part. Finally, you can wrap a large Israeli bandage around an abdominal evisceration, protecting the abdominal cavity. Available in both 100 and 150mm (4 and 6 inches) widths it’s undoubtedly a good dressing and worthy of a place in your first aid kit, but what other options are there? Top – Israeli 4&6″ bandages. Bottom – T3 Enter the T3If additional pressure is required the closure bar is easily removed from its first closure position and inserted between previous layers of the leader directly above the protruding pressure bar and rotated. This rotation of the closure bar acts to further press down the pressure bar onto the wound to exert blood-staunching pressure. The closure bar is used as before to secure the dressing. Apart from the usual assortment of plasters and antiseptic wipes for the smaller personal accidents, it is also wise to carry a couple of bandages of some kind. But which one? The Emergency Bandage® allows for 30-40+ lbs of pressure to be applied to the wound and maintained with the integrated pressure bar. It exerts immediate and direct pressure to the wound and is closed off with the integrated closure bar. Subsequent wrappings of the leader secure and maintains the pad in place over the wound and by covering all the edges of the pad, acts as a sterile secondary dressing. The bandage leader is woven to remain at its full width and will not bunch up or twist itself into a rope.

Loop for one-handed application: Near the gauze pad, a loop is sewn into the bandage, allowing you to slip it over our arm for one-handed application. A closure bar at the end of the bandage to secure the bandage and add pressure to a wound. It allows the bandage to clip neatly in place without slipping [3] and can be used by a "sliding motion with one hand." [2]

The Emergency Bandage provides injury victims acting alone the ability to accomplish the entire bandaging operation independently, including, in certain cases, tourniquet application, even if using only one hand. Uncontrolled/uncontrollable bleeding is the most preventable cause of deaths on both the battlefield and the streets. Studies show up to 50% of combat fatalities and 39% of civilian trauma fatalities are due to uncontrolled bleeding from an extremity. It is possible to die from femoral arterial bleeding in as little as three minutes.
