How jenever is made depends largely upon the intended type as those described above. Overall, however, the manufacturing process isn’t altogether different than gin save from a few techniques that are reminiscent of whisky. The nose has juniper, lemon, and a lovely Bombay-Sapphireesqeue note of exotic coriander. The nose is well-rounded with a lovely citrusy undertone. Quite nicely balanced and quite classic. The palate of Zuidam Dutch Courage citrusy at first, but with a rich spicy character, with notes of violet, anise, and pine-note accentuated juniper. Hints of walnut and nutmeg in the late palate, leading into the finish. Moderate in length with a dry clean finish, this is easy drinking, well-balanced classic gin.

These innovations have introduced a new wave of jenever that respects the spirit's heritage while appealing to contemporary palates. There are many different “jenever cities” in the Netherlands like Schiedam which is perfect for a daytrip, Groningen, Delft, and (of course) Amsterdam. After learning about the history, let’s talk a bit about the taste. What is it like and where do those flavours come from? Since we are better at drinking than investigating on this one, we’ve asked for a little bit of help and teamed up with Damrak Gin! When life gives you lemons (or oranges in this case) make a G&T. Image: Damrak Gin Firstly, jenever is served in a stemmed tulip glass similar to Polish karczmiak flutes for vodka. This is filled until the spirit’s service tension allows it to rise above the glass’ brim without spilling. Traditionally, the first sip is taken by leaning forward with the glass on the table to avoid spilling it. Additionally, juniper is diuretic, which means that it helps flush out bacteria and toxins in your system. As it can also help with stomach acid production, it can even help as a digestif. Gluten, Carbs, & Calories In Jenever Malted Barley (Dutch: Gemoute Gerst): Malted barley is necessary as it contains the enzymes which are critical to the fermentation process of Rye and Corn starch.

Truth be told, the term probably didn’t exist until much later. But nevertheless, good story right? Tasting Notes As for gluten, many brands and experts will argue that the distillation process removes gluten from the grain. However, people with celiac disease are probably better off not taking the risk as there have been reports that it causes adverse reactions. Dutch entrepreneurs and brothers Noah Duijst and Siward de Groot, who have extensive experience in the wine and spirits industry, are behind the acquisition. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. As a clear grain-based distillate, junge jenever is particularly low in energy with a single shot containing fewer than 100 calories. However, oude jenever will likely be more. In either case, carbs are essentially absent, though. The cultural significance of Dutch gin cannot be overstated. It has been the toast of many a celebration and the companion of quiet reflection. It is served in a traditional tulip-shaped glass, which is filled to the brim to allow the aroma to greet the drinker before the first sip is taken, symbolising generosity and fullness of experience.

Of all the gins out there, none hit the sweet spot between classic gin flavour and moreish complexity quite like No. 3. If you have room for just one gin on your shelf, we’d make it this one. Traditionally, jenever was produced using malt grain in a relatively similar way to whisky, which results in a smooth and aromatic flavours with unsurprisingly malty flavours. The is still practised today and is referred to as oude jenever. Alexander: " As genever was originala Dutch drink many Dutch gins are strong on juniper berries and many herbs are used. Additional The Netherlands is a very sea focussed country and coastal gins are very popular where botanicals are used which are available near the coastal areas." In either case, a second process will follow where juniper and other herbs are steeped in the base spirit before being distilled. While gin can sometimes be made using vapour infusion, most brands will undertake the same process. Venture all the way to the east of the city to sip jenever in the leafy surroundings of the Flevopark. As one of the most scenic spots on the list, Distillery 't Nieuwe Diep benefits from a waterside location and is housed in an old pump house built in 1880. It opened as a distillery in 2010 and serves up homemade jenever using traditional methods. Don’t miss their special fruit flavoured options, and if you feel like a break from jenenver their liqueurs make a great alternative. In de Olofspoort

The story of Dutch gin begins with its primary ingredient, malt wine, which is essentially a very strong beer distilled to create a potent, flavourful base. This malt wine base gives Dutch gin a much deeper, almost whisky-like flavour compared to the lighter, cleaner base of its English cousin. To this base, distillers add a carefully crafted blend of botanicals, with juniper berries being the most prominent, lending the spirit its distinctive piney, peppery profile. Effects of wine on inflammatory markers. Atherosclerosis. 2004;175(1):117-23. doi:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2004.03.006 Alexander: " In Holland we see the same trend as in the UK but only a couple of years later. Since recentlymany new craft distilleries started in Holland and consumers are asking more and more for local craft gins."
