Description

The other aspect of civilization building that this reviewer enjoys tremendously is seeing a dynamic civilization emerge on the multi-terrain map. The included map tiles give a huge variety and require deep considerations of terrain on almost every turn. The default way to play for this reviewer will be for players to build the map from scratch thereby adding even more fuel to the conflict in the game. Civilizations are identified by a name and an iconic leader. Here America is led by Theodore Roosevelt. Before 1 of your caravans explores, you may place a water token touching that caravan's space. [2 caravans] Move each of your caravans up to 4 spaces. They can move into spaces matching this slot's terrain or lower. Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Terra Incognita, a brand-new expansion for Sid Meier’s Civilization: A New Dawn!

Most disappointing is the way tech has been handled. There isn’t a full tech tree like in the video game, which you can slowly work your way down; instead there’s just a dial that ratchets up every time you choose to increase it, and every time you hit a certain threshold you’re allowed to upgrade one of your action cards. For me, there are a few gripes which become apparent once you have a few games under your belt. Resource tokens are used within the game to buy some bits, but it feels considerably restricted in this area and so it can feel slightly redundant at times as there only really spent on wonders. I'd liked to have seen more emphasis on trade as well, and being able to upgrade focus areas on a slightly more detailed level, rather then just changing a card for a slightly better one. Fantasy Flight managed to do that twice in 2017, and to excellent effect. Doom might not have been as fast and bloody as its video game inspiration, but its emphasis on switching weaponry and the heat of close-quarters gunplay meant it felt very much like Doom. Fallout was much the same: it didn’t take 400 hours to finish, but it did a fantastic job of replicating the sensation of being of a lone character trawling the wastes trying to survive (and getting caught up in a story). Straight off the bat, fans of the video game will instantly find themselves feeling at home. Taking out the map tiles, you’ll see they are are all made up using the classic ‘Civ’ hexagonal map structure, while the artwork throughout is clearly emulating that of the video games. When all is set up, it really makes you feel like your digital empire has been transferred onto the table. The colors, graphics, and design all match up nicely with the game.

The Plan In Action

Place 3 control tokens on spaces matching this slot's terrain or lower adjacent to friendly cities. The bulk of the components are made out of cardboard, such as the map tiles, which makes me feel like this might struggle with several years of rigorous play, but on the whole, it works well. That said, watch out for the long, thin focus bars, which are likely to be the first to perish. Whether you’ve built countless civilizations from the ground up, or this is your first time guiding your people through the ages, the Terra Incognita expansion is something that you won’t want to miss. With new leaders and map tiles alongside the addition of districts, governments, exploration, and so much more, this is an expansion that’s unlike any other.

Based on the incredibly popular former mod Rise of Mankind, A New Dawn transforms Civilization IV, reaching to new heights and giving the players the best Civilization experience of all time. When you move a caravan from your economy card, it can move from any of your cities (even a city that is not mature.)
