Description

He created prints from a large variety of trees, of which the oldest was a fallen 200-year-old chestnut tree once planted by Frederick Law Olmsted.

Some of his other sculptures include Twins (2000), a bronze cast of two conjoined saplings, and Blow Down (2002), a skinned and flattened spruce tree mounted on a wall. The wood, mostly northern white pine and hemlock was cut from the property and milled to my specification at a wood mill right up the street. I not only create objects but love collecting objects, these two practices result in a studio that is visually overloaded. Thinking about the print making techniques I am employing in the artist’s book making project, using nature to make prints, this work is highly relevant. So when I speak of,” beyond the landscape”, I am referring to your own landscape, or more simply, “it is whatever you imagine.

If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill shows us why. Creating large-scale relief prints from the cross sections of trees, the artist reveals the sublime power locked inside their arboreal rings. I was drawn to the different sizes of logs and tree cuts he uses to print from and how much detail he encapsulates into the result. I am experimenting with creating tools using nature to draw and paint with and even though Bryan hasn’t made the tool here, it is still a natural material applying paint to the paper surface. He is printing over a period of time and you can see and feel the slight changes in the texture or mushrooms growing on it. I visit a few bone yards that are filled with discarded trees, and friend’s occasional point me in the direction of a newly cut tree.BNG: After finding a worthy subject, I plane and sand the printing surface,” baby bottom” smooth, raise the grain, seal the wood and begin to print. The prints are beautiful, the paper is a nice weight, they’re large and allow for a lot of writing, there is also a blurb on the back of each card.

Gill found that things were more beautiful and complex inside than what was visible from the outside. I send a LOT of snail mail, several letters a day, so I have a large collection of cards and these are in my Top 3 for certain. Earlier stints include the American Film Institute, Clinton-Gore White House, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.In 2012, Princeton Architectural Press published Woodcut, a book which displays a selection of Gill's prints; it was named one of The New York Times Magazine 's best books of the year. GemmaSchiebeFineArt II Continuing my artistic education and recording my time throughout my second year as a BA (Hons) Fine Art Student at Cardiff Metropolitan University – “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. The notecards are well-presented on recycled paper with attractive packaging and I highly recommend them to anyone interested in trees and / or woodcuts.
