Cowboy action shooting ( CAS, also known as Western action shooting, single action shooting, cowboy 3-gun, and Western 3-gun) is a competitive shooting sport that originated in the early 1980s, at the Coto de Caza Shooting Range in Orange County, California. Cowboy action shooting is now practiced in many places with several sanctioning organizations including the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), Western Action Shootists Association (WASA), and National Congress of Old West Shooters (NCOWS), and Single Action Shooting Australia (SASA). It’s bulkier than our other two rimfire single-action revolvers, emulating the dimensions of the Colt SAA properly. Like the Ruger, it has a transfer bar safety so it can be safely loaded with six rounds. The Bounty Hunter pictured above is my personal gun that I’ve had since I was 21 when my father gave it to me. Maybe it makes the list out of nostalgia and personal bias, but that’s ok. Final Thoughts Competitors in SASS events have to choose an alias to compete under. The alias Evil Roy belongs to one of the greatest SASS shooters to ever live, so it’s no wonder he has his own line of competition revolvers offered by Cimarron. Evil Roy Competition revolvers have a number of thoughtful features for the competitor. Rifle Requirements" (PDF). Wild Bunch Action Shooting Handbook. Single Action Shooting Society. One exception to this is that safety glasses and hearing protection must be worn when shooting. Depending on the standards of the sanctioning organization, clothing may be historically accurate for the late 19th century or may just be suggestive of the Old West. Some groups allow for costume similar to that worn by characters in a Western B-movie, such as Hopalong Cassidy or a television series like Gunsmoke. [1] Alias [ edit ] In recent years, various clubs that host wild bunch matches have begun expanding and developing other categories using various other rifles in lieu of a pistol-caliber lever-action rifle. Though these categories are not yet officially sanctioned by SASS, they have proven to be quite popular with participants in the sport. When coming to the line, the shooter places their guns as required by the stage description. When the competitor steps to the start position, the range officer conducting the stage asks if the shooter understands the course of fire and clarifies any questions the shooter may have. The range officer asks if the shooter is ready, tells the shooter to "stand by", and starts the timer within two to five seconds. When started, the timer gives an audible electronic tone and the shooter begins the stage. [1] This revolver went through two iterations before landing at the popular New Model Russian, which was manufactured between 1874 and 1878. Over 60,000 guns were produced, with a large amount going to Russia and the Japanese Navy.

The names & deeds of those carrying guns has become legendary in history of the Wild West. While less frequent than the novels & Hollywood would have us believe they did occur throughout the period & as such are an important part of the history of the region. All of the below categories may also be shot as lady categories; there is no men's category (all are considered open), and ladies may shoot in open categories. According to SASS, this form uses "firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West just after the turn of the 20th century". [3] The revolvers used in normal SASS events are replaced with a 1911 pistol; lever-action rifles remain in use, while only Winchester Model 1897 and Winchester Model 1912 pump-action shotguns are allowed. [3] As in traditional CAS, originals and replicas are acceptable. [4]A six-round tournament. This caliber was originally known as the 36th. In the Old West, gunfighters preferred the Colt Navy Revolver. This handsome cap-and-ball six-gun was one of the most popular firearms in the region, and their size and weight made them lethal. The Schwerer Gustav was the world’s largest- capacity carbine rifled weapon, and its massive weight made it a powerful piece of artillery. These guns are well-known among gun enthusiasts because they were a mainstay of the Old West and their popularity ensured that they would be popular for many years to come. Budget Cowboy Guns Cowboy action shooting is a type of multigun match using a combination of handguns, rifles, and shotguns in a variety of " Old West-themed" courses of fire for time and accuracy. Participants must dress in appropriate theme or era costumes, as well as use gear and accessories as mandated by the respective sanctioning group rules.
