Quote from: Your Mother on March 30, 2012, 04:16:38 PM Im working on a project on making the new plactics as attractive as possible. Partly I think the gunners would favour open helms over visored helms for the better visibility and partly I want to save the lovely sallets for my Besiegers.

I blend in the integrated base of the models with the square flat bases to which they are glued with a layer of Milliput. In the case of the provinces these forces fall under the command of the Elector Count, and in the case of the city-states they are under the control of the city's Burgomeister. This model kit review has the special purpose of evaluating two kits from two very different genres for use as Empire State Troops in Warhammer Fantasy Battles. of the torsos are wearing cloth gambesons which could pass for either un-armoured or lightly armoured. Armies must travel hundreds of miles with little indication of when or even how they might be getting home.

State Troops form the mainstay of the Empire's armies, though armies are often bulked out by ad hoc militia regiments recruited to fight as and when required (who will often be made up of mercenaries or local peasants levied from the surrounding lands). I have applied some varnish to the dowel to waterproof it, and then I have added some texture to the bases. This box set contains 10 multi-part Empire State Troops, which can be assembled with spears, halberds or swords and includes options for a Champion, Standard Bearer and Musician. They serve as the fire watch, police force and town or city guards whilst in time of war they march out to defend their province or to join the main Imperial army under their Elector Count. The state regiments have evolved a highly effective style of fighting, although each regiment is a independant entity but they can also from smaller detachments to support other regiments, flanking the main formation.State troops are divided by the weaponry they carry, of which there are six common varieties: Halberdiers, Swordsmen, Empire Spearmen, Handgunners, Empire Archers and Empire Crossbowmen. It is also common for regiments to have different coloured cuffs, sleeves, or other minor details whilst retaining the overall colour of their state.

Really it is like two kits in one since it also makes alternative halberdiers, spearmen and potentially also swordsmen as the other State Troop kit from GW does. It is a delicate trick though, because once the beholder figures it out and consciously spreads his attention around to get a more balanced perspective, the illusion is broken. The more I studied the models the more I was daunted by the prospect of painting up big blocks of 30 or 40 of them. State Regiments are mostly infantry, and may be equipped in a variety of different ways with different types of armour and weapons. Far less common than Empire Handgunners and Empire Archers, the establishment of units of Empire Crossbowmen was influenced largely by the Tileans, where the weapon is often used by their mercenary companies, and thus are far more common in the south of the Empire. Those feverish souls ensnared in the wallet emptying cult of GW, are no doubt suspecting that I am being somewhat less than impartial. So I figured if I was to add them (probably in the form of Mannan’s Blades mentioned above) it would be at a later stage in a detachment capacity – so they were a no for now. Yep, you heard right - I think that with the uniform colours added for your fav province these figures are great! There are far more weapons arms in the box than bodies to carry them though, so that is a lot of waste.
