It is my extra special pleasure to share the experience of reading this series with my friend, Shirin. If talking about the topic of international sex trafficking or the global big-business industry of pedophelia and child pornography bothers you, stop reading this review immediately. Although this lacks the drama of a Jo Nesbo (my favourite thriller author, who I’ve reviewed rather a lot on this blog! of our deliveries are made by Royal Mail as we think they give the best service and cover all areas of the UK. I would like to be able to say I have read most of the big ones, yet the reality is that I have read nowhere near as many as I would like to be able to claim.

Unlike Neeson’s character, Inspector John Rebus stops short of actually doing something worthwhile, such as alerting the media or exposing the guilty. Rebus is able to arrest Hyde's owner and several high-profile members, but to his outrage and disgust all the prisoners die suspicious deaths: the powers-that-be are covering it up to prevent scandal. A nice touch is the cynical end, the knowledge that the truly rich and powerful can hush things up and save their skins (the occasional sacrifice notwithstanding) -- and Rebus' awareness of all this. But the real beauty, the true quality of the writing, is in the character development and the superb dialogue. Rankin's attentive annotations touch on the jacket design, the writing of the book 'in my little flat in Tottenham, while I worked as a hi-fi journalist', the book's echoes of Jekyll and Hyde ('pretty much the overarching theme of the early Rebus novels .

I enjoyed this one more as we already knew him as a character, his history was in place, and we knew what to expect from him. Getting back to Rankin’s novel: published in 1990, “Hide and Seek” was written at a time when this horrendous shit was still a taboo subject. I’ve been trying to amend that, and my journey into Ian Rankin is an example of me trying to better myself when it comes to one of my favourite genres. We will process the refund due to you as soon as possible and, in any case within thirty (30) days of the day we confirm via e-mail that you are entitled to a refund for defective goods. Hyde into then-modern Edinburgh ("one reviewer 'got it'"), and with this book he began to like Rebus as a character and thought he could use him as a recurring mouthpiece for stories about his views on Scotland.

As part of his investigation, Rebus finds the young woman named Tracy who knew the dead man and heard his terrifying last words: "Hide! Both mother and son must face a dark secret from their past, in the growing knowledge that their small dramas are being played out against a much larger canvas, glimpsed only in symbols and flickering images - of decay and regrowth, of fire and water - of the flood. Rebus is an interesting guy, not always likable, often grouchy and impossible to deal with (the fact that he’s able to get beautiful women is still a bit iffy and too much male fantasy territory, but at least he can keep his hands to himself). It emerges that the dead man was a photographer who took and hid some sensitive photos in a specialist private members' club - Hyde's - where highly connected people in society watch illegal boxing. He has an illegal boxing club named after Edward Hyde (and by coincidence, Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic just happens to be the book Rebus picks out of a pile to read while in the middle of his investigation). A confession: I never ever look those underlined words up unless comprehending some expression is pivotal to understand a key point of the book. I know there are about 20 other Rebus books out there so I’m taking my time, but it’s been a while since I found a series that truly interests me, and I’m curious to see where Rebus will take me next. We mainly use Royal Mail Tracked 48 Service for goods which weight less then 2kg, all other goods will be delivered by a Courier. I would probably have never read them otherwise, as I tend to like literary novels and newer thrillers, but I won’t ever turn down a free book!
