My daughter and I were fortunate to be able to hear Michael Morpurgo speak at our local library recently, and we were entranced by his storytelling.

This book is historical fiction, but there is information at the end of the book about the real people in the story and who the story was loosely based on. Although there are never direct parallels between history and contemporary events, it was interesting to observe as I re-read this novel for the third time in 2023 how many problems experienced by the Roman empire in it’s decline we are presently experiencing. As a reader, we learn a lot about him through his story despite not taking the journey /with/ him, only hearing about it through stories of the past. My favourite part of the book was when the retired soldier was telling the little boy, Barney about the soldier Billy Byron, an inspiration to all young boys who want to be like him.In fact those who fought to stop the coalition of tribes from crossing and were only narrowly defeated were the "federate" Franks. The way that Billy deals with what is happening in his own life, how he processes what he sees in the war, and how he acts because of it speaks volumes of his character. The story-within-a-story format added to the engagement, and I was fascinated with the events, as they are based on a true story or at least a legend believed to be true enough by many. Michael Morpurgo is an amazing author, having written loads of books for children of all ages, and different styles of favourite books - he will always have something for you!

As with much of his work this book is just as suitable for young people as for adults - and as always so well written.I have re-read this book several times because of its brilliant reconstruction of some of the definitive events, which brought to an end the western Roman empire. The Emperor had to enact a law severely punishing such behaviors but this does not seem to have been very successful. I loved the author's style and descriptions of the bleak landscape, forts, and towns; I could feel every sword thrust, the ice and snow, every emotion of the protagonist! In his final battle with the Germans, he makes the decision to spare the life of a German soldier who ultimately turns out to be a young Adolf Hitler.

His novel War Horse has been successfully adapted as a West End and Broadway theatre play and a major film by Steven Spielberg.
