About this deal

They are Fabric for Fashion – The Complete Guide and Fabric for Fashion – The Swatch Bookby Clive Hallet and Amanda Johnston (Laurence King publishing, 2014).

This is a swatch book so, apart from descriptions of fabrics and comparisons, it contains many swatches of many types of fabric. This updated version of the bestselling Fabric for Fashion: The Swatch Book, includes additional swatches, new close-up photography to show fabrication, yarn windings as well as finished fabric swatches and more! This book is budget-friendly as well as it is a generous size to fit in your art studio as well as workplace and comes in handy to you. The book features step-by-step factory photoshoots of the processes involved in the production of fashion fabrics – digital and screen printing, discharge printing, knitwear, hand embroidery, hand weaving, jacquard weaving, lace – offering an invaluable insight into the world of fabric manufacturing today. They have also included many current photos of the fabrics sewn up into garments which helps to illustrate how the final garment would act. Color Charts XI provides ample space for you to record color gradients and all your different color combinations, which will help you never forget which colors you earlier used to make the shade.

The huge collection of swatches reproduced in this book ranges from the creations of historic fashion houses famous for their heritage textiles to examples by contemporary designers working at the cutting edge of technology. Textilepedia: The Complete Fabric Guide is a book that is easy to navigate, and the best part of it is that it simplifies information by comparing and providing relatable stories. Clive Hallett is a freelance design consultant and has worked in the fashion industry for over forty years. One thing though – it looks like the acetate satin swatch is mounted sideways in this copy of the book? Chances are excellent though, you may not know the name of the kind of fabric you think you want which is why this book’s relatively small size is useful because you can scan it rather quickly to find what you want without getting dragged down into a lot of minutia. The Colored Pencil Swatch Book has 4 different types of pages: Swatch pages, Palette pages, Gradient pages, and Project pages. All in all, a great reference book that I know I will use time and time again, will save me many future headaches, make purchasing fabric online so much easier and will add much diversity to my future home sewn wardrobe.

Aimed at fashion designers, Fabric for Fashion:The Complete Guide is unique in explaining the behaviour, properties and sustainability impacts of a wide range of natural and man-made fabrics. The swatches are quite large and, unlike the swatch book we used in college, come adhered to the book rather than in a large bag requiring you to sort through and try to figure out what is what. What I really enjoyed was seeing a variety of different fabric samples that I don’t see often in my area, like fabric made from Eucalyptus and birch trees, and fabric made out of milk (Yes! All in all this book is chocked full of good information that I think would be useful in learning about and choosing fabrics, but it really shines when paired with its companion The Swatch Book since that's where you'll actually get to touch the fabrics The Complete Guide is talking about.Again, while not a fully comprehensive text with space to expound pros and cons, fibers like peace silk, banana and corn are included. The fabric swatch book by this author contains guides that provide sample course outlines, assignments, and tips for daily use as well as obstacles that any fashion professional would come across. I had my eye on the first edition, but it’s been out of print for some time, so I was really excited to receive this from Laurence King. I’m pretty new to clothing sewing and I love all my sewing bloggers, but when ya’ll talk about this fabric or that fabric, I have no idea what it means. The book will be useful for anyone who works with fabrics and is the ideal companion to Fabric for Fashion: The Complete Guide.

This is a nice touch since it helps with a deeper understanding of each fiber and ultimately a more informed fabric selection. With accompanying information on fabrication, weights, and construction, this book will help student fashion designers to make informed textile choices based upon an understanding of raw materials together with the processes that make up a fabric. FAYE FRASER NORTHAMPTON COLLEGE Great introductory coverage of natural and synthetic fibres and manufacturing processes within industry. I just bought Joi Mahone’s book, Create the Perfect Fit, and I am learning so much about pattern alteration.
