About this deal

Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, 'Fisherman's Friends: The Musical' is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music which smashed box office records in Cornwall. In addition to this, the combination of their voices produced a muscularity which seemed to suit the genre of both sea shanties and songs of the sea, rooted very much in the labour-intensive seafaring traditions of crews of working men.

They're the original buoy band, straight outta Cornwall, and having already landed one hit movie based on their incredible story, The Fisherman's Friends are ready to set sail on the sequel and another album. With the addition of some instrumentation (and it must be said youth) from a couple of mates from just down the coast in Padstow (itself a town long-steeped in musical tradition), they embarked on their momentous and well-charted voyage. Gareth Malone's documentary on sea shanties, shown in May 2010 on BBC 4, included a contribution from the group. In 2009 BBC Radio presenter Johnnie Walker was in Cornwall on holiday and came across two of their homemade CDs. Sole Mates comprised tracks that the band had performed during their previous two tours and featured additional instrumentation from Phil Beer from Show of Hands and Emma Murfin from Cornwall-based folk act Black Velvet. This facilitated the adoption of natural, freewheeling harmonies very much in line with traditional Cornish singing practices, as noted by the Reverend Hawker back as far as the early 1800s, where participants would congregate in a semi-circle and ‘strike sound’. Lobb and former member Hawkins were previously both supported by Vintage Guitars and regularly use their instruments on stage. Then there's the small matter of their 2022 performance on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, the most famous music festival in the world.
