I'm definitely a devotee - Pride and Prejudice is my favourite book, I've read it many times, seen multiple adaptations, read many books on the author, visited her home, identified with her heroine and even written essays about the source novel. In a debut that encompasses events before, during, and after Austen's [ Pride and Prejudice ], introverted Mary knows she'll have to marry, escapes the pressure through a love of reading and writing, and bears witness to a scandal that brings out her strong-minded independence. But, it must be kept in mind that this re-telling is from the perspective of a middle child who sees her sisters in a different light than anyone else. Because an Earl’s son is likely to mistake a lady, dressed as she was, with her accent, in Regency England. Since Part 1 followed the Austen timeline, I knew that Part 2 would be uncharted territory as Austen ended with only a shadow of future felicity between the older married sisters and their younger siblings.

I think the only hope for this book is for the publisher to market it as satire, whether it is or not.She was incredibly well known and a gated area underneath a bridge at the station was then transformed with hundreds of bouquets, balloons and photographs in tribute to her.

The writing was good overall (notwithstanding those unfortunate anachronisms), and I enjoyed the charactarizations, surprising as some of them ended up being. Earlier this summer I felt myself very giddy after reading about Kitty Bennett in What Kitty did Next and I couldn't wait to hear about middle sister, Mary. The tale kept my attention from beginning to end, even if I did disagree with some of the characterizations and events. It wasn't out of character for her to take that walk to get home, it was a shortcut for her to get home. All the evidence suggests she was happy - she had a happy day with her family and boyfriend and it was the worry of being in trouble when she got home that she was now distracted. Sweet and innocent Georgiana Darcy is a total bitch who tries to smash Mary's hands in a piano just for touching her instrument! I've also read other works inspired by Austen's masterpiece of manners, for both teens and adults, and tried to keep an open mind.

Mr Udomhiaye then said, 60 seconds after this, she could be seen "crossing the tracks with her mobile phone in her hand". After the author breaks away from the conclusion of Austen’s story and creates her own narrative, I was surprised and startled by the choices she made. As I worked my way through the first third to half of the book, I came to the realization that its biggest challenge is Mary Bennett. She is widely acknowledged as a leading lawyer in the subscription credit facility market and represents many of the world’s preeminent sponsors of private equity, real estate, energy, infrastructure, debt and other investment funds on the largest and most complex fund facilities. She’s no orphan having books thrown at her, sent to a horrible school, fed burnt porridge and obliged to earn her living as a governess. My hackles were raised with a mention of "Lizzy's bad teeth" however, and every subsequent character who appears - from Darcy's sister to Colonel Fitzwilliam, acts so out of character with what we know of them from Austen that it became so disconnected with her original that I just gave up feeling outraged and was able to enjoy it as a separate piece. And this was a trend with attractive women in the novel; many of them were characterized as vain to make Mary seem like this righteous victim all the time. Split into two halves, we are treated to Austen through Mary's eyes - and Part One, I appreciated, as an insight into well-beloved Bennetts, balls and beaus - though as soon as I saw Mary and Darcy speaking to each other I could feel my rancour rising.

Poor Mary, not sweet and beautiful like sister Jane, not pretty, lively and quick-witted like Elizabeth, not a party girl like Lydia, not even as sympathetic as Kitty, who was pretty much a non-entity in Austen's novel. Mary B is a re-telling and continuation of the Pride and Prejudice story from Mary Bennett's point of view. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products.
