Have a character or two start collecting relics and when it’s there turn as the Leader, they aren’t able to do certain things.

Once the sand timer is running, the players must use this time to gather any equipment needed to overcome the challenge as noted on the Encounter tile. You must work together and communicate well to successfully scale this mountain, find fascinating relics, then escape from this accursed place. A pretty straight forward game that relies heavily on communication but then gradually makes communication maddeningly difficult to do.You can always pull the worst cards (I’m not a huge fan of the face-petting one myself), and a few blank cards are thrown in so you can make up your own. There are also randomized equipment cards, as well as a stack of relic cards, a stack of injury cards and three tiered madness decks, the latter of which are randomised and placed face down. You’ve got to learn to trust each other and listen to what the others are saying, because more often than not you’ll have plenty of cards to meet the challenge, but you can’t just throw every card on the table. If an Injury card must be drawn and there are no Injury cards left in the deck, the players immediately lose the game.

Mountains of Madness won’t be the first thing I grab when friends are over, but for a certain bunch of Shoggoth lovers this will entertain even as it drives you mad. I would have expected this game to have more of a "ticking clock" mechanic than a puzzle to solve (which was one of my initial criticisms of Mansions of Madness.But don’t worry, at the end of the round the Leader position rotates so everyone has a chance to move the plane and disappoint their friends. As a board and card game reviewer, I'm hoping that this blog will inform, educate and entertain you. That is until Mountains of Madness where players, as they continue through the expedition, are driven “mad” by their experiences. The Relic tokens are confusing and cover up portions of the player’s player board determined by the Relic card. On that note, completing these challenges would be relatively easy were it not for the fact that madness cards affect the players whilst going through the challenge process.

Mountains of Madness would be a boring trek without these, and if you're focused on playing these games as a min-max hand management game, you're missing out.The players are able to discuss which path they think is best but ultimately the decision rests with the Leader. That said, set-up and gameplay is more complex than most other social games, and may disappoint people looking for a certain level of grimdark complexity. The character sheets seem like an afterthought as they have no real effect on the game - I would have loved some sort of "fatal flaw" mechanic to each character that amplified their insanity throughout the game.
