About this deal

Celestron’s signature orange-tube telescope combines advanced features and excellent optics in one easy-to-use system, the NexStar 6SE. An update-capable hand controller, future-proof thanks to flash EPROM technology, can download the latest control software version via the Internet at any time. Advice from owners is to attach the scope to the single-armed fork first (and on a soft surface like carpet to prevent scratches). The included eyepiece and red dot finder are useful accessories that allow you to start using the telescope right away.

A knob allows the OTA to be disconnected from the Celestron Travel Pro fork mount, allowing you to take the telescope on flights as hand luggage and to put the mount in a suitcase. This telescope provides a very good image, boasting high contrast and definition and provides a lot of pleasure when planetary observing. This is a great telescope package for beginners because it includes everything you need to start observing the night sky. You can use the included Nexstar+ hand control to help you locate over 40,000 celestial objects, or you can take a Sky Tour that lets the 8SE show the best objects currently visible. Catadioptrics, which are also known as compound telescopes, combine mirrors and lenses to provide a long focal length in a relatively short body. The database and goto motor take away all the heartache of trying to locate an object by map reading and star-hopping. However, despite many, many complaints, Celestron still doesn’t package the NexStar range with any power cable.

Sure enough, with the simple SkyAlign routine performed beforehand, the telescope slowed right to it, first try. Forty years later, Cestron have added cutting-edge features, while staying true to founding philosophy. You need a minimum signal (observable image separate from background noise) to stack, so low exposure times may not have enough detail, even when stacked. This wobble can be reduced by using Celestron’s vibration suppression pads (sold separately), but will still be present when the tripod legs are fully extended. You can mount the 8SE on an equatorial mount and the Celestron C90 T-adapter and T-mount let you attach your DSLR camera to the 8SE.

Incidentally, the Cloudy Nights forums are filled with opinions stating that the 8SE is only good for visual astronomy and planetary imaging. That’s exactly what I did in this picture, using a piggyback mount with my Canon T5i DSLR with a 200 mm lens. The major benefit of an altazimuth mount is you don’t need to worry about polar alignment, so your scope is ready to go as soon as it’s mounted. The light then passes through a central hole in the main mirror and into the focuser at the bottom of the OTA. It’s time to complete the setup by telling it where in the world you are so you can find objects to look at with ease.

There are a few quirks of course (the red dot finder scope is rudimentary, and the single-arm fork mount is a little shaky), but overall everyone seemed to agree that it was a smart purchase and they got a lot of use out of it. This simply means that the telescope is a little too heavy for the tracking mount that is supplied with it, and I would have to agree with this.

The weather has not been friendly, from -30 C nights to consecutive weeks of precipitation and clouds. Collimation requires a screwdriver to adjust the three screws which hold the mirror in place (find them at the rear of the telescope). magnitude can usually be imaged, although I can certainly image fainter magnitudes depending upon the color. You can use the nearest town, but you’ll have a better experience if you put in the coordinates of where you’re observing from (link opens a new tab to work out your latitude and longitude).Focal Ratio (f/stop) directly affects how long of an exposure you will need to take to photograph a given object. You can observe hundreds of pinpoint stars in the Hercules Globular Cluster, the spiral arms of the Whirlpool Galaxy, and more.
