About this deal

Among them are such favorites as "Number Thirteen," "Canon Alberic's Scrap-book," and "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad.

With a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated December 25th 1911, and a Blackwell's bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Finely bound copy of the Dover edition, which kept the work of James available for American readers before the ghost story revival. I covered yards of paper to put in the moon shadows correctly and it is certainly the best thing I have ever drawn". Published on the 80th anniversary of James’s death, this is a graphic novel to be read on a winter’s night, a book to curl up with – but not a book for the faint-hearted. They have written established characters such as Doctor Who (The Whispering Gallery, 2008 with Ben Templesmith) and Sherlock Holmes (The Trial of Sherlock Holmes, 2009 with Aaron Campbell, and The Liverpool Demon, 2012 with Matt Triano), as well as creating their own including Brit-Cit Psi Division, Judge Lillian Storm (Storm Warning, 2015 with Tom Foster).Ghost-Stories of an Antiquary was accordingly published with just the four completed works as a tribute to McBryde. Klare Kaufempfehlung für diese meisterhaft geschriebenen Geistergeschichten, an denen ich mindestens acht Stunden Lesevergnügen fand.Montague Rhodes James was born in 1862, the son of a rector, and he spent virtually his whole life in the groves of academe: from Eton School he went to King’s College, Cambridge, where he obtained a double first in classics, and took root there, being appointed Junior Dean before rising to the post of Vice Chancellor in 1913. Sinisterly appealing jacket artwork graces this scarce first edition in jacket; classic horror stuff, with a clergyman possessed by the devil. An excellent copy of James's first collection, cited as marking 'the beginning of the modern era of supernatural fiction.

As with Self Made Hero's previous Lovecraft adaptations, this is an excellent, faithful and respectful transposition of hallowed text to graphic form. James’s literary ambitions began and ended with ghost stories: ‘I have never cared to try another kind,’ he admitted, but in specialising he made the genre his own.James’ ghost stories do not follow the same style as ones that preceeded them and that led to him being known as the founder of the antiquarian ghost story. There is often a quiet scholarly person as the main protagonist, and the settings are often rural, or a musty old library or church. Both David Timson and Stephen Critchlow are superb vocal actors, with very pleasing voices, the voices of men you could sit and chat with over a pint of beer or a glass of port.
