About this deal

I would still recommend giving this a shot if you enjoy a cozier, slower fantasy with low stakes and light romance. Note: While reading this book with Rebecca, we had a couple of conversations about whether Emily is supposed to be written as neurodivergent. It felt like Heather Fawcett had gotten so caught up in developing her characters and creating atmosphere that she just forgot to flesh that part out and build up to it… Still, I didn’t really care. The faeries themselves are reasonably varied, with some the epitome of innocence and others very calculating, though all of them love a negotiation. She’s a character that’s interesting and unique, and not typical of what is usually written for a female character.

She is incredibly smart and while her social skills may be lacking, her ability to enter the world of and deal with the Fae is like no other. There are also some other issues outside of this, if historical accuracy isn't something that bothers you. With a fantastic range of international bestsellers, including Jim Butcher, Trudi Canavan and Brent Weeks, and exciting new talent such as Ann Leckie, James S. As for Emily, while she is apathetic and uninterested in helping others, she becomes a heaping mess if something happens to Wendell. But the more faeries that come up from under the snow, the more a chilling mystery unfolds within the cottages of Ljosland. Fawcett appeared to be trying to incorporate different elements from these earlier fantasy works, but failed to package them into a book that was engaging and thought provoking. Emily is writing the first encyclopaedia of faeries and she is in the a village in the far north finishing her book.

When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.

And even when she notices that she’s offended someone, someone she needs on her side to get her work done, she doesn’t ask what it is she’s done, not even the friendly young boy who seems to think she’s great for reasons unclear to me. Brilliant, prickly Emily Wilde and her infuriatingly charming fellow scholar have a special place in my heart now. As they're settling in, Emily receives a letter from one of her Cambridge colleagues, Wendell Bambleby, that he's planning to join her.

All characters, including the faeries, felt like they had hopes, dreams, and reasons for their anger. The buoyant end promises further thrilling adventures filled with magic, fun, humour and hopefully even more of that delicious will-they-won’t-they romance. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Beautifully written, with characters you’ll grow so fond of, this is the whimsical yet cosy fantasy I have been craving and couldn’t love it enough! A lot happens in the final part of the book as they delve deeper into the realms of the faeries, but the way it is told is at times indecipherable and hard to make sense of.

I got a fantastic feel for the place, the people and the fae and it all flowed so well with an easy pacing that made it impossible to stop reading. It’s written as if we are reading pages of Emily’s diaries with little scenes taken from the current events, which sounds like it could be jarring, actually the whole style of writing should make us feel disconnected from the story and the characters, but in fact it had the complete opposite effect. At a later stage in the book, there is an attempt to show her having actual feelings but in actuality it's just another transactional response. The first 20% is decent as a standoffish Emily settles into a remote village with prickly locals, but then the book gets AMAZING when Wendell shows up. But anytime he was on the page it was like a breath of fresh air and the best part of the book was those few times we got his POV.
