About this deal

This is an intimate portrait of Fred, from his childhood in Bolton, to his days as a steeplejack – the job he was to love above all others – and on to his successful television career.

Fred Dibnah won the hearts of millions of viewers with his television programmes about his life as a steeplejack, and his passion for the industrial history of Britain. In 2002, World of Books Group was founded on an ethos to do good, protect the planet and support charities by enabling more goods to be reused. His name became synonymous with the stereo type no-nonsense, straight-talking Northern character, and of craftsmanship, hard graft and of daring-do. Images of Fred Dibnah is a pictorial tribute to Fred, bringing to life his infectious nature and personality. Our current partner charities in the UK are READ International, the National Literacy Trust, Room to Read. If you haven’t already read about him in the Middleton Guardian’s popular Bygone Days pages, Alan McEwen is fast becoming Middleton’s very own Fred Dibnah. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Fred's passion for the glories of the Victorian age and his fascination with the landscape he grew up in, plus his admiration for the craftsmen and labourers who made it all possible, captivate us on every page. Before his death in 2004, Fred presented many popular series, including Magnificent Monuments , The Age of Steam and Made in Britain, all of which attracted viewers in their millions.

Dedicated to the memory of Fred Dubnah, it charts the progress of Fred Dibnah’s chimney drops from 1970 to 2004, interspersed with valuable old photographs, personal memories of the man himself, quips and some tall tales. Cheshire based Keith Langston is a widely published and highly respected photo journalist specialising in railway and other transport related subjects. In 'Mighty Cathedrals' Fred examines the innovations in building techniques which allowed the Normans to build some of the nation's most remarkable cathedrals. Travelling the length and breadth of the country, the intention was to seek out the remarkable achievements of the craftsmen, engineers, inventors and industrial workers whose endeavour made engines like Fred’s possible. I knew Fred and I know Alan too and this book gives an insight into the admiration the latter had for the former. Keith Langston has captured the life of an enthusiast , never happier than when working on his latest steam-powered project.
