Beth's placement taught her so much, from field and ID skills to public speaking and working as part of an international team. We end up discovering that geography is the science that literally "studies the world" (geo-earth; graphy-writing) and that a geographer in the world has the mission to discover the connections - often hidden - of the "big picture". During my first year I have also enjoyed being able to get involved in a wide range of activities beyond my studies.

The subject is very diverse, offering a wonderful opportunity to discover our physical environment and its interaction with humanity. As the river flows downstream the gradient becomes less steep, meaning that there is less vertical erosion, and instead lots of lateral erosion.Alongside my studies I have also enjoyed making the most of some of the many opportunities Cambridge has to offer, in particular rowing for my college and organising the College winter ball. Rock tends to be much harder, and therefore resistant in the upper course so less lateral erosion happens, keeping the valley narrow with steep sides. What follows is an interesting summary of ideas on the future of a sustainable / unsustainable world.
