About this deal

Another story thread is told through the eyes of Crystal, who has literally come up through the gutter, a past she hides from everyone, especially Tommy. He is constantly arguing with his ex-wife and still struggles with the death of his mother, the rape-murder of his older sister and the suicide of his older brother, all in the span of less than a year, when he was just 12. Two more cases hit Jackson’s books at the same time: a grieving man haunted by the murder of his daughter ten years before; a woman who has lost touch with the niece she promised to look out for when her sister was arrested for killing her husband. It stars Jason Isaacs, who has also narrated the abridged audiobook adaptation, as protagonist Jackson Brodie.

As well as the Jackson Brodie series, Kate has published various other novels, a play, and a collection of short stories. Another, Amelia, stays out in the world but is unable to move forward, she is stuck in a dead end job and can’t form meaningful relationships.Kirkus Reviews found this novel revealing the talent Kate Atkinson showed in her first award-winning novel, “back on form” [2] with this story. Not only do we get to follow Brodie’s thoughts, but we also get front row seats to many of his clients' thoughts too, making this not only a really interesting P. Jackson Brodie is back, still working as a private investigator, mostly divorce and missing persons cases, and still trying to save people. He has fallen on bad times, had been through a sham second marriage to an imposter who stole all his money, but strangely he is not too upset by this. These have always been novels about character, and there are enough moments of tenderness between parents and children to balance out the cruelty inflicted on the young.

I haven’t got my hands on the new book yet, wanting to do things properly and reread the previous four. She's recently began wearing skimpy clothing and dancing suggestively to songs by Christina Aguilera, which concerns Jackson. The story is set in Yorkshire, in and around Bridlington, and from the blurb on the back cover we know it is about people trafficking. And Atkinson’s characters are so refreshingly real, their behaviour so surprising yet understandable, you can’t help but become caught up in their worlds.

It's a pity because I would like to find out what the future held for Jackson and possibly DCI Louise Murdo, but there is almost nothing at all about Louise in this book. Often they conceal those hells so expertly, they convince the world they’re happy and normal, even those closest to them. Ten years since we left him, now living back in his native Yorkshire, Brodie’s solitary existence has been interrupted by the arrival of his 13-year-old son, Nathan, for the summer holidays. In the present day, Theo compulsively walks to the building, now converted to a beauty therapy parlour, every year on the anniversary of the murder, and decides to enter it that day to get a closer look of the boardroom where Laura was murdered. This is a great pity, because there are some great plots, and I love the ex policeman, ex army Jackson Brodie character. Fans are rewarded with some past characters, Atkinson’s quiet and sly humor, an interweaving of the at-first-appearances unrelated incidents, complicated characters, and the inner workings of their minds. Whether it’s Sebastian Faulks doing P G Wodehouse, or William Boyd doing James Bond, the results are mixed and don’t enjoy the popularity of the original series.
