Part of the new core range of whiskies launched by Isle of Jura in early 2018, this 10 year old expression takes the place of Jura Origin. With water it was much smoother, very chocolatey, hints of coffee and black pepper again after a while.

I too was not sure at first but soon realised that this has a lot to offer in terms of smell and taste and has a fairly long finish.

Made by a tiny island community, on an island where the 200 residents are outnumbered by some 5,000 deer, Jura distillery makes a surprisingly light whisky - expertly balancing the sweet and the smoky. Delmé-Evans was most involved with Jura, however,remaining on the board until his retirement in 1975. It's initially aged in American white oak bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Oloroso sherry butts and bottled at 40% ABV. Jura whisky is made using the crystal clear waters that run off ‘The Paps of Jura’, the tallest mountain range on the isle. Palate: Oily and moreish with spices - cinnamon and cloves - with an underlying salted caramel depth.This Jura Rare Vintage, distilled on 11th April 1989, captures the diverse character of our island home. With less than 200 people living on the island, it's at the heart of their community and sits in the middle of Craighouse, the island's biggest town. Aged in American white oak and a combination of 6 different types of French oak (Vosges, Bertranges, Jupilles, Allier, Troncais and Limousin if you are interested?Winding through lush countryside and tracing the shores, it truly is a beautifully scenic route to our distillery. After maturing in mainly American oak ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky is decanted into Jura’s iconic bottle – with its broad shoulders and rounded edges originally designed to withstand rough sea journeys. It is not my favourite Jura; and I find it needed a considerable quantity of both ice and water for me to find it drinkable with any pleasure. Matured in American white oak ex-bourbon and hand selected American Rye barrels, the casks deliver depth and complexity to this 14 year old Single Malt with layered spice, aromatic, herbal and floral qualities.
