The 25-year XO: this exceptional rum, aged for 25 years, unveils elegant and subtle flavors of candied fruits, mild spices, and honey. Anyway the 12 year reserva is a decent but not great rum hint of citrus some alcohol scent and burn. Reserva might well imply it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were much younger rums in the blend.
At first sip, flavors of toasted oak and vanilla delight the senses with hints of raisin and sherry, built upon layers of spice and sweet dried fruits. It smells like the sweetness could wisp you away to the Caribbean, only to be shot down at the port of flavour. I'm not one who normally drinks rum straight but the Kirk and Sweeney 12 year rum is so smooth that it actually might be one I could enjoy neat.

I liked the taste as it wasn't quite as sweet as it smelled, and I prefer dry and oak flavors in my liquors and wine, which this had quickly, but it dispersed even quicker. Playing off the concept of global navigation, an antique nautical map of the main rum smuggling route is silkscreened around the circumference of the bottle. KIRK and SWEENEY was a wooden schooner, best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast during the early years of Prohibition.

Initial taste reveals a nectar-sweet quality, leading to a weightier body that indicates substantially aged rum that’s serious in character but not overbearing. Top with freshly grated nutmeg, add orange moon standing up inside the glass, then add a pineapple wedge to the glass and serve. I occasionally got some mild fruit but nothing substantial, maybe a hint of orange rind and apricot, really not sure.
It offers a bit of vanilla, dark chocolate and dark berries, but is dominated by somewhat bitter oaky notes.
It tastes like an agricole, albeit an exceptional one, and tastes at least as good as the far more expensive Clement XO (imho).
