About this deal

His output was vast, including 50 plays and adaptations, several novels, volumes of autobiographical works, plus numerous essays and miscellaneous papers. Immerse yourself in the world of the Birling family, and explore the ethical dilemmas and social issues raised by J. Weder arbeitschutzrechtliche Gesetze noch soziale Hilfestellungen waren gegeben, um den benachteiligten Personen dieser Zeit Unterstützung und Sicherheit zu gewährleisten, und der Fall der jungen Frau die sich wegen diesen Umständen umgebracht hat, ist nur ein Exempel von vielen in dieser Zeit nach 1900 herum (hier genau 1912).

I hate almost all of the characters, but that is because of the characteristics that Priestly wants to portray, so over all it’s a wonderful play, that is very cleverly written! The audience is invited to wonder whether we have gone back in time, and whether it will be repeated, or would different events ensue. The celebration is interrupted by Inspector Goole who is conducting an investigation of the suicide of a working class woman. The entire play is set in the drawing room of the Birley family, as Inspector Goole questions the family about a young working-class woman, Eva Smith, also known as Daisy Renton, who has apparently killed herself. The play takes place on a single night in 1912, slightly before the First World War, and focuses on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands". Dennoch scheint mit seiner Person etwas nicht zu stimmen, was in der Mitte und vor allem am Ende des Buches deutlicher wird.

John Boynton Priestley, the son of a schoolmaster, was born in Bradford in September 1894, and after schooling he worked for a time in the local wool trade. Der defacto Hauptgegenstand des Dramas beziehungsweise des Inspektors ist sein Foto des "Tatorts" beziehungsweise des toten Mädchens. Long considered part of the repertory of classic “drawing room” theatre, the play has also been hailed as a scathing critique of the hypocrisies of Victorian/Edwardian English society and as an expression of Priestley’s Socialist political principles. This is NOT the case - that's just a twist - if you had assumed that than you'll not be able to sympathise with Eva Smith's plight (society prefers strong characters even if s/he are victims suffering the utmost misfortune). Additionally Priestley is very clear about the physical attributes of his characters and their demeanour, to similar effect.

This gripping play offers a powerful commentary on society’s moral fabric and the consequences of our actions on others. The story begins with the self-satisfied gathering of this greedy, insensitive and culpably unaware family being visited unexpectedly by a policeman. It has been a perennial favourite, being translated and produced all over the world, and a film of it from 1954 starring Alistair Sim is still popular.
