In Livin' Loud, Public Enemy founder, hip-hop pioneer and revolutionary activist, Chuck D, presents the first collection of his illustrative art with a 13,000-word biographical commentary offering unprecedented insight into his life and work. There was another black freshman from a neighbouring town, and we were a formidable pair – he was doing super heroes, I was doing college madness.

But all of this seems in the service of giving a rounded portrait of its author: working musician, political orator, visibly grateful to those who inspired him and people he’s worked with, in some ways mellower than the firebrand listeners first encountered during the late 1980s, in other ways remarkably unchanged. His book is the culmination of a string of his exhibitions appearing at Gallery 30 South, Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects Gallery and Adelphi University. As he told DW McKinney in a separate PW interview, his work “rages against the machine that powers those styles that are always striving for perfection. The box set is the inaugural offering from Enemy Books, the new Akashic Books imprinted curated by Chuck D. In a digital era where people are listening with their eyes, I think we’re seeing the elements of sight, sound, story and style finally coming together in a way that I’ve been about my entire life,” said Chuck D in a statement. Writing alongside his sketches, D laments the decline of collectives in hip-hop, recounts recording sessions with Ice Cube et al and reminisces about Prince holding garage sales and, in the studio, ‘tossing tape around like a chef’.
