I will read one of Cole's recent novels to see whether her youth when writing Dangerous Lady explains some of the weaknesses - I am just amazed (based on reading Dangerous Lady) how massively successful Cole's novels are.

I felt like reading it again just to see how many times she said the same thing, but I couldn't put myself through that again reading the same thing. Well, that’s what I was going to say (yes, I know, I’ve said it) until I thought I’d just check up some background details and I discovered that this was her first book, written when she was only twenty, that she finished it and locked it away in a cupboard for a couple of years. Although initially shielded from the going ons of the Ryan brothers, she enters into the family business as they attempt to rule the East End. Dangerous Lady absolutely zips along and the reader is drawn into a gripping crime story, a crime saga, dealing as it does with the Ryans, an East End criminal family, over a period of thirty years.

He knew nothing of 'his' baby she was carrying and then had a horrific abortion which lead to her being hospitalized and no longer being able to have kids. She begs her brother to let her get involved in 'The Business' and does a fine job and earns respect. Her unique, powerful storytelling is acclaimed for its hard-hitting, true-to-life style - there is no one like Martina Cole. Despite this being predominantly a crime novel, I loved the way that the family saga was wound and weaved into the story.Most of her novels feature a female protagonist or antihero, and some take place within the Irish community in and around London. This focused on the role of girls in these gangs, which have been responsible for crimes ranging from drug dealing and car theft to robbery and murder. In the meantime, I'm looking in the cupboard at home because I fancy I put a really great story in there several years ago.
