About this deal

Bomfim is regarded as one of the Duoro Valley's best vineyards and has been a staple of Dow's Vintage Port since the nineteenth century. Senhora da Ribeira’s wines are some of the finest in the Douro and they complement those from Bomfim in the composition of Dow’s classic Vintage Ports. Vintage Ports such as the remarkable Dow 1896, the 1927, 1945, 1955, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1980 and the Dow 1994 are all legends in the history of this great wine.

This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered, with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish. It has a classic riverside location, with south facing vineyards, ensuring prolonged exposure to the sun. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage; in fact, it would be hard to find a better port from that year. Looking back through declared vintages, 2011 produced fabulous wines with freshness and a fruity style which will make them great drinking throughout their evolution.

On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet.Dow’s Old tawny Ports are drier than most (although they retain the classic richness of all Port wines).

Selected batches of wines are also made at Dow’s other winery, Quinta do Sol, just a short distance downstream where the prototypes of the revolutionary robotic lagares were first trialled in 1998 and 1999. Dows 10 Year Old Tawny Port has a deep russet centre with a distinctive garnet edge and a hint of amber and bright aromas of red cherry and almonds with toffee and vanilla notes balance the nose. This wine has perfect provenance having matured solely under the ideal conditions of the Dow vintage cellars, whose location benefits from the moderating maritime climate of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The Millennium vintage of 2000 was wonderfully rich and ripe, approachable in style but worth keeping. Light tawny color with spicy aromas and a hint of balsam, but the palate delivers very sweet, smoky plum, herbs and mint characteristics. While some houses now release their single-quinta wines just two years after the harvest, others hold them until they are deemed mature. They will usually mature a little earlier than the very rare declared years, but can be every bit as good as some other Vintage Ports.

Quinta do Bomfim 2006 Vintage Port shows a lovely bouquet of red fruits and spicy aromas and the palate is full of jammy red fruit and notes of spices, mint and chocolate. Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all Bomfim Ports. An excellent vintage port from a single estate (Bomfim), which has been farmed by the Symington family for five generations. Ports aged in the Douro tend to react to the great heat of the summer months by gaining over-strong caramelised flavours. One of the classic Douro riverside quintas, Senhora da Ribeira was acquired by George Warre for Dow’s in 1890.Dow’s Fine White was 100% fermented off the skins and using temperature control so that fermentation takes place between 18-22ºc. Dow's attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house.
