About this deal

A picture of a boat is discovered after it has been realized that Birgitta is not in the apartment, and they head out to find it. What you’re gonna do is watch carefully while we haul the bastard in, tell the Norwegian press along the way what a wonderful job we’re doing together—making sure we don’t offend anyone at the Norwegian Embassy, or relatives—and otherwise enjoy a break and send a card or two to your dear Chief Constable.

He's an international number one bestseller and his books are published in 50 languages, selling over 55 million copies around the world. One would think that the trail had gone cold, Harry as drunk of a mess that he is, but amazingly his mental faculties are still intact.

Harry’s fish-out-of-water experience in a foreign land and the odd-couple pairing with a mismatched partner makes for pleasurable reading all the way to the end. The cliffs plunged down in front of them, and way below the ocean breakers ended their long voyage in a thunderous crescendo among the rocks. Norwegian police officer Harry Hole is sent to Sydney, Australia to serve as an attaché for the Australian police's investigation into the murder of a young female Norwegian girl residing in Australia, Inger Holter. For me, the biggest insult to Nesbo was to see him advertised as “the next Stieg Larsson” when in fact The Bat was written eight years before The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

With a stiff back and jet lag beginning to announce its presence, Harry and his suitcase were now alone on a pavement in a town boasting a population roughly equivalent to the whole of Norway, outside the splendid Crescent Hotel. The Bat is a worthy introduction to Scandinavian noir for the uninitiated, even if this first Harry Hole novel is set in Australia. Hole (Holy) is the usual flawed character; recovering/back-sliding alcoholic, not universally liked or respected by his own Police Department transported like other before him to the land down-under.However, the passenger seat was so full of papers, cassettes and general rubbish that Harry squeezed into the back.

Hope you enjoyed the flight,” the stranger said with evident sincerity, like an echo of the air hostess’s announcement twenty minutes earlier. When he eventually works out who the killer is, having led his Australian colleagues down a few blind alleys, he almost instantly has deep insight into who he is, which made me wonder why he hadn’t worked it out sooner. Also, the characters are generally well-developed, and it’s nice to see a queer character or two that isn’t entirely stereotypical show up in a book that’s now some 25 years old. I was more amused than astounded by the way Hole develops deep friendships with people within a few days of being in Australia working on a murder case in a second language.A fascinating book, filling in the gaps in Hole’s biography and telling the story of the murder case in Australia that cemented his reputation as a brilliant investigator. Harry goes to the circus again, this time not to see the show, but to arrest Otto, or to question him.
