I almost didn’t because I simply couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at the constant excuse-making that the author made for her boyfriends behaviors. As she and her family moved between Cambridge, Venice and Oxford, she kept the often shocking truth entirely to herself for a long time, trying in vain to help her partner find a path to sobriety, until she herself finally broke from the trauma and started to speak out – only to find she was one of hundreds experiencing similar things, also living in silence and fear. She constantly laments the happy times, the happy Mike, yet does nothing to show us what they or he looked like. My thought is that, if the ultimate decision is based on a "fickle", "case by case" judgement, why have guidelines at all? It's an invaluable read and essential reading if your drinking is ruining the lives of those you love OR you are in a relationship with an abusive drinker.So much quicker on the brain than sausage semaphore, venison vitriol, prosecco provocation etc Though I still crack up at the sausages. I bought this book for my mum for Christmas, I had heard Liz's interview on Radio 4 maybe mid 2021 and then struggled to find the book. E. When he first pushes her she says well it’s not okay to push someone but I was there and I know him this isn’t him.
It is uncomfortable to read about her co- dependent and totally unhealthy relationship with Mike, it is sad and harrowing,it goes round in circles of repetitive behaviour that you would think she knew better to leave. Liz Fraser's frank, lucid and sometimes funny, often upsetting account of living with a chronic alcoholic brought back so many memories, none of them good, and, after finishing the book this morning I turned to my wife and thanked her for standing by me when I didn't deserve her love and support. But what I really struggled was the way in which she claimed to be the victim of the abuse by an alcoholic and suffered such terrible things as a result of Mike’s addiction.
