About this deal

In his Toro Rosso, Max finished seventh, beating his teammate Carlos Sainz and both drivers for the more senior Red Bull team. They put him in their car at Estoril the day after the Portuguese Grand Prix, his first ever drive in the monstrous V10 engines that were prevalent at the top of motor sport at the time. The son of F1 driver Jos, Verstappen junior quickly stepped out of his father’s shadow: his youthful charisma, ferocious speed, fearless driving style and refusal to back down mark him out as a true champion. It wasn’t like it is today where they really help the other driver who is struggling but at that time they didn’t care. Hamilton, knowing a crash that ended both their races would hand Verstappen the title, veered away from the corner.

A very heavy focus was put in Max dad Jos Verstappen which is maybe due to Jos being a more intense character than Max. For weeks, the chatter in the paddock had been about how aggressive Max would be in the final race of a season that will be remembered by many for a series of crashes between him and Hamilton. Max Verstappen je teraz na vrchole, vyhráva takmer všetko, smeruje k ďalšiemu titulu, takže sa hodí. He had a few moments earlier voiced his frustrations at the ‘typical’ decision not to let the cars unlap themselves and give him a shot at Hamilton. Some joked that he was hoping to get an early start on the 124-mile trip back to Belgium so as not to miss the birth of his son – he had already driven further than that on the track before being forced to leave his car parked at the side of the road. The races would be shown on an enormous projector at the end of the room with memorabilia and sometimes a giant portrait of Max’s face sitting on the stage, more often host to a 8local band or an open mic night, next to the screen.

Frans had been at parties like this before, but never with a Verstappen on the top step of the podium. Además, el libro no solamente habla sobre su vida familiar y profesional, sino que también aporta datos sobre cómo nació el automovilismo en los Países Bajos, y en cómo los eSports fueron fundamentales para la F1 durante el último tiempo.

He spun out of his second race too – ‘every time I was trying to match Michael’s pace, [the crashes] never stopped me trying’ – before Lehto came back from injury. Even in that very first experience of F1 though, the watching media were treated to a reminder of the two-faced nature of speed. I must say I thought it would be quite difficult, the jump from F3 to F1,’ Jos told reporters at the time. Max’s response was an unintelligible cry of pure emotion, the kind that had not been building for just a few seconds, minutes or hours, but for a lifetime. Max’s career has barely spanned a decade and he’s already gained the title of the most popular Formula One driver.

Starting with the Daily Express, a title with a long history of motor racing coverage, he has spent most of his career covering Formula 1, tennis, boxing and a host of other sports, now writing for the i newspaper. As the son of F1 legend Jos and elite-level kart driver Sophie Kumpen, Max was destined to be a racing driver. I expected to have a lot of f1 content inside of it but actually it starts when he is born and it ends in 2020 at the end of the 2020 season. Wherever possible, I will include appropriate acknowledgement of the original authors, photographers and publishers. The story of his life is obviously not up to date considering that his career is still unfolding but it gives a very good idea of where he has come from.

Prior to reading James Gray’s book, I didn’t know much of Max’s background other than he was super fast karter that had regular clashes on track with a young Charles Leclerc. In the modern era he might have been fast-tracked into a driver academy or one of the larger teams with seats in various series.

This detailed biography with high-quality photographs is the perfect gift for any fan of the rising F1 star Max Verstappen. People talk about his aggressiveness, and the book does point moments of awareness when he’s pushed it too far, but not many nice guys became F1 legends (Kimi being of the best amongst them). If you’re a Max fan or enjoy reading some of the behind the scenes stories at Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing, then you will mostly enjoy this book. Transfer to Red Bull: Max was elevated to the ‘senior’ team for the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix — and almost miraculously became F1’s youngest ever winner first time out. Biography: James Gray is a national newspaper journalist and broadcaster with nearly a decade of experience.
