About this deal

DI Jamie Johansson is a wonderful protagonist in this piece, offering up some of her saltiness for which she became known in the past series. Her past in both the UK and Sweden emerges throughout the book, though the reader sees how ‘childhood blinders’ forced Jamie to see her father in only one light. Now, she is reader to face the truth, even if it is raw and gritty. DI Johansson uses her policing skills throughout the uncover pieces of the puzzle that were lightly glossed over b the Swedish authorities all those years ago, discovering what works for her and offers a much-needed voice for the victims of these horrible crimes.

Therefore, do not take my opinion on this one as anything more than what it is: one Reader's jilted opinion. I was excited to read The Angel Maker. Even better was getting the audiobook narrated by Rosalie Craig! I’ve been reading an awful lot of truly superb books since I started focusing on my reading lists, and I guess part of a five-star rating is a gut reaction. Every book I’ve given five-stars to, it’s been a no hesitation, boom, you just know it. For Angelmaker, I hesitated. It’s good. It’s really, really good! But I hesitated. Maybe I didn’t quite connect with the hero. Maybe the steampunk and gangster themes never quite merged satisfactorily, but stand separately throughout. Maybe the doomsday device just didn’t quite deliver on the build-up. Maybe? If you could see the future, would you want to? You can’t, of course. A life is lived forward. The present is a vantage point from which every moment in the past is inevitable and every moment in the future invisible. Most of those moments won’t be important but a handful will turn out to be pivotal, shattering even. And you never know which until it’s too late.

We have a serial killer, we have an estranged brother and sister, we have nefarious characters, we have police detectives, and we have a very important book but what does it all mean? You'll have to read this to find out. Kate Smith had a charmed life growing up. At the end of her school year, she had it all - a boyfriend and a promising future awaited her. Then her younger brother, Chris was the victim of a violent crime, and everything changed. Bone cancer in children? What's that about?' How dare you? How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault? It's not right. It's utterly, utterly evil." And then the story wasn't really that creepy either. I was hoping for something a lot more depressing and dark (like Frankenstein), and definitely more horror. But nope. There were some tiny parts that grossed me out, but in the end it was all pretty underwhelming.I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. And I love Jamie too. She was so well written that she got catapulted to my top favourite book characters of all time. What will Katie do? Can she save her brother by uncovering the big mystery he's gotten himself into, finding the identity of the man who drives a red car and stalks around their neighborhood, and connecting the puzzle pieces to reveal the truth about her past? Are all of these mysteries connected? As I said above, there are many levels of meaning in this book -- thought it's possible I over-thought things as I sometimes do. No matter, it lent much to my enjoyment of this book, digging under the surface of Mr. Brijs' words, looking behind the story, no matter if Mr. Brijs intended all of this or not!

The plot begins as fiction and mystery, then morphs into sci-fi in a way that you almost don't perceive at first, and wind up totally buying into, and then tosses on gangster culture just for good measure. Fun! So many tropes in the thriller/horror category are done again and again and again. But Alex North always seems to deliver something original, which this reader appreciates. While “The Whisper Man” remains my clear favorite of the three, this is still worth reading!! Prominently science fiction but it weaves espionage, adventure, historical and futuristic elements in its plot – a little of everything to suit all taste. There’s a vast range of expert characters that repair, modify or invent unusual devices and machines. For someone like me, who doesn’t read science fiction that often, the technical details (mechanical in’s and out’s and the tools used) seemed a little heavy to begin with and slightly intimidating. But once I realized it wasn’t necessary for me to comprehend every minor detail but to understand its purpose - what it is and its intended use – I then felt more at ease and could see the plot was taking shape.

Told in multiple voices and with digressions into the past, The Angel Maker is disturbing, absorbing and, in the beginning, a crazy kaleidoscope of storytelling. Be patient, though...the big picture here does come together. And when it does, it's not one you're likely to forget." When I read The Whisper Man in January of 2020, I was so impressed. It was everything I wanted in a Crime Thriller. It was gritty, eerie, sordid and compelling. He’s currently doing his masters in Paris, studying Genetic Mathematics. That’s the cover story, anyway. We think that having passed his probation period with all that crazy travelling, he’s now settled down to do some proper spy-training, and they’ve given him such a complex masters for his cover story to discourage people from prying.

He uses crazy words like “Whojimmy” and “Doodah’s”. One of the best side characters happens to be an old Pug named Bastion who is blind, has 2 pink glass eyeballs, one tooth, and a very mean temperament, and he tops it all off by having a freaking hilarious internal monologue. There are countless unique and colorful characters that also add awesome dialogue to this book: Angel Maker is the stunning first outing for DI Jamie Johansson and will have readers on the edge of their seats. With a ruthless killer, a host of likely suspects, tight plotting, gritty characters, and a twist that will feel like a punch to the gut, this is the crime thriller you've been waiting for.I have a friend called Justin (true story); a crazy, loveable Zimbabwean who wears board shorts and sandals, whatever the weather. He has crazy dancing feet. He can wear a bow-tie and mean it. He’s a genius (but not an evil one). He’s also a spy. In The Angel Maker, there are many different characters and shifting time periods. The author presented events in an almost chaotic, haphazard fashion which led to confusion.
