Clynelish distillery got my attention last September when we held a Compass Box tasting with our local whisky society. The quality of the tasting was so good and Clynelish was the base to many of Compass Box’s quality products, that it got me thinking: I have to get some Clynelish single malts. The finish is satisfyingly long and lingers on the palate, leaving a taste of oak, plums, tobacco, and clove. This is simply one of the best widely available core range whiskies. A timeless profile, good depth and complexity, and some unique touches. A benchmark everyday dram: in times when it’s easy to spend € 150 on a mediocre whisky, it’s great to come accross such value for money.

Whisky reviews for Clynelish 14-year-old

This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. But, if you take a look at the modern incarnation of Diageo’s Classics, things look rather different now: https://www.malts.com/en-gb/home/. There’s not quite the definitive list that there once was, but five malts receive particular attention in being described as ‘Five Classics’– Talisker and Lagavulin still receive the high billing they’ve always had, but are joined by Cardhu, Mortlach and The Singleton. The peat is noticeable but not overwhelming on the palate, and it is nicely combined with slightly sweet and well-balanced flavors. Nose: Classic zesty, waxy and mineral aromas, accompanied by toffee and honey, melted butter on toast and a whiff of marshmallows. Whiff of orange peel and green grapes. Undeniably Clynelish. Clynelish’s ultimate success –indeed cult status –is one which came out of human tragedy. This is one of a number of ‘Clearance’ distilleries (Talisker is another example) which appeared in the earlier part of the 19th century. This was a period when some landowners, seeing the profits which could be made from sheep farming, forcibly moved their tenant farmers from their ancestral lands. Caithness and Sutherland were the scenes of the most brutal of these clearances, the perpetrators The Duke (and especially Duchess) of Sutherland and their estate managers. Quinta Ruban is quite good, making it one of the best malts of its kind and a personal favorite of mine.
