About this deal

There are a number of expert master distillers who are women but we don't tend to see that through the branding or through their story.

Diablesse Caribbean Rum. This is the second rum from the Diablesse brand, that I have reviewed recently. At present the two rums are their full portfolio. The nose is quite funky with lots of banana cake, pineapple and some nice dunder like notes. Bit of pencil shavings an some light nail varnish (is there such a thing?). If you like rum, oranges and ginger cake then you will very much enjoy this. If you don’t well you probably are best steering clear. It is also served in a number of bars across Manchester, including Cottonopolis, Refuge, The Edinburgh Castle, Wood & Co and Volta. Diablesse Clementine Spiced Rum. La Diablesse is a character in Caribbean fokelore. More specifically the island of Grenada.

Presentation wise, Diablesse is a very well branded rum with a very clear presentation. The stubby rounded bottles have very distinctive and very striking designs and the branding is very strong. Diablesse isn’t a word that I’ve come across before so this meant searching for information on this brand was really easy. You aren’t going to get this rum confused with any others on the shelves. There aren’t many Spiced Rums that go to the trouble of giving you a chunky cork stopper. The balance is also lent a hand by the Barbados element which keeps everything together. It doesn’t let the DDL or the Jamaican elements run away with the show. This pure blend has no added sugar, caramel or other adulteration and is tropically aged in American Oak ex-bourbon barrels to give an added rich depth of flavour. The Cotswolds Distillery is set to launch a new limited single cask release called Cotswolds Distillery Single Madeira Cask. Diablesse Clementine Spiced Rum on the other hand is a unique blend of Demerara rum from the Diamond Distillery in Guyana, which has been flavoured naturally with Clementine, Clove, Star Anise, Cinnamon, Vanilla Pod (please, have gone steady with this part!), Ginger and Pimento.

I think that pretty much covers everything, so lets see how I get on with this Spiced Rum. I’ve been trying recently to cover more of the “ different” Spiced Rums, that have appeared on the market and avoid the numerous Sailor Jerry and Kraken copycats. This being a Clementine Spiced Rum I am seeing it more as a flavoured rum. However, I understand the spices in the mix pair with the Clementine, so its not all just about the orange citrus. Stuart Fritz, commercial director at Keepr’s, said: “Our new bottle is a visual celebration of our natural heartland; Keepr’s’ connection to nature and the passion we have for our craft go hand in hand. The result is a premium, beautifully executed range of premium spirits that will appeal to bartenders, pubs, bars and restaurants, and hospitality outlets.” Launched in 2019, Manchester-based Diablesse is owned by Farman & Sons Ltd, an independent Mancunian company aiming to uncover new flavour profiles through their unique rum blending.

Brothers said as consumer demand for innovative flavours continues to increase, cherry is trending up 32% in the categories of strongest and future flavours to watch (source: Doehler Alcoholic Flavour trends 2021). She is depicted as a demon with a cows hoof at the end of one leg. It is said that she hides her “evil” face with a huge fan and leads unsuspecting men into dark forests, where she sacrifices them to the devil. Diablesse Caribbean Rum is a versatile and very enjoyable blend of rum. They could easily have went for a cheaper blend and added some young Trini rum. Instead they opted for better quality more interesting rums and you can tell the difference. Diablesse Rum, an independent female-owned rum brand based in Manchester, has launched the first coconut and hibiscus rum, which is also the first to naturally pink in colour.Diablesse Clementine Spiced Rum (40% abv) is the only clementine spiced rum in the world and an international gold medal winner. It is a 100 per cent single origin Demerara rum from the world-renowned Diamond Distillery in Guyana. Using centuries-old traditional distillation methods, it is infused with only natural ingredients; clementine, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla pod and clove, and has a unique and appealing flavour profile. Diablesse Rum founder Cleo Farman said: “The launch of our latest addition to the range is incredibly timely as drinks with hibiscus flavours continue to gain popularity across the industry. We’re proud to be leading the way by offering the trade something truly unique, with a flavour profile that’s never been done before, at a time we know consumers are curious and thirsty for it.”

It’s really nice and stands up well to the diet cola. The aroma remains of Ginger Cake and Clementine/Marmalade. Again its ridiculously easy to drink like this. It also works really nicely with lemonade and even with tonic. Rum and Tonic is becoming a bit of a thing. I like the fact you can still get some of the sweet raisin notes from the Demerara rum used in the blend Distilled, produced and distributed by The British Honey Company, the Keepr’s range features five craft spirits, including Classic, using a London Dry base; Raspberry and Honey Gin; Elderberry & Mulberry and Honey Gin; Smoked Honey Infused Bourbon; and Honey Infused Spiced Rum. Palate: Really fruity, banana, butterscotch, fruitcake, tropical fruit, nice sharpness, warm, peppery oak on mid-palate. In Chorlton, Cleo, is on a similar mission and has no doubts about her goal. ‘I want to convert gin drinkers and tempt rum virgins,’ she says.

More Alternatives…

Cider is Wine, which has a mission to connect small cider producers with great standards to potential consumers, has added two variants to its English Wine Project. I would say to any woman who wants to get into this industry to just go for it and to ask for help from other women. Cleo, who has a long-time partner and a ten-year-old son, Frankie, gets her special recipe rum blended and produced by a local bottler in Chorley. The name for her rums comes from a legendary story about a Caribbean seductress who enticed men into a forest, never to be seen again. The vanilla pod isn’t really all that apparent -it’s probably just adding a little sweetness to the mix. This is probably the type of Spiced Rum you don’t want to start drinking neat after a few more “normal” rums. I dare say a headache will undoubtedly await the next day. Alongside an empty bottle. The finish is of reasonable length and the ginger remains for quite a while in the mouth. It’s quite moreish though. The new rum is also bottled to be more sustainable Diablesse said, using 65% recycled glass (30% more than most bottles), which is much lighter, resulting in a better carbon footprint.
