Holidaymakers on the Welsh coast bask peacefully in the summer sunshine, blissfully unaware of the huge and evil army of giant crustaceans that lurk in the dark, off-shore waters…watching, waiting…while the police investigate a series of apparent drownings. Literary Heritage - West Midlands: Guy N. Smith". January 2003. Archived from the original on 23 April 2008 . Retrieved 17 September 2009. That's awesome, despite being the second silliest thing I've ever seen Godzilla do. On Mystery Science Theater 3000, it even amused Joel and the bots.

The novel’s virtues are in its fast moving story and easy to read prose (this doesn’t mean the writing is especially good, mind you!). But as a gorefest the book is a disappointment, and as a monster mash only marginally satisfying. I can only hope those problems are ironed out in the subsequent CRABS novels, as I like my trashy fiction heavy on the trash, dammit! It ends in a final climactic showdown, an epic resolution that yet promises conflict still to come: Characterisation is generally pretty solid and well developed. Yes many of the characters are pretty darn clichéd. The oafish Colonel Goode plays out his role perfectly, whilst our principal protagonist, Cliff Davenport, just becomes more heroic (in a very understated British fashion) the further through the tale you are. The characters are each strong in their roles and vital to the progressing storyline, which helps makes the novel as a whole that little bit more subconsciously engaging for the reader. While reading through this novel I could never quite shake the feeling that this started, on some level, as Doctor Who fan fiction. The Third Doctor and UNIT versus the Macra? Maybe. Professor Davenport often feels like a Pertwee character (though younger and a bit lustier) and the general pacing of the book feels like the ebb and flow of a 70s-era Doctor Who serial. Just one with a few added sex scenes* and maybe a bit more gore and violence.Cliff withdrew his left hand from the warmth of Pat’s tight sweater and felt for the fastener on her jeans. Then he pulled her zip down and she lifted herself up slightly off the ground so that he could unclothe her. The whiteness of her thighs was in itself seductive in the soft moonlight, the darker triangle of soft fluffy hair between them seeming to withhold secrets from him. Secrets of men who had lain there. Men who had been sexually satisfied beyond their wildest dreams. And of one man who had walked away in preference for another woman. Night Of The Crabs’ was the first instalment in Guy’s signature ‘Crabs’ series, but should possibly be read after the later released prequel entitled ‘ The Origin Of The Crabs’ (1979). The prequelends exactly where ‘Night Of The Crabs’ takes off, bringing together a seamless and tight storyline to begin the crabs series off with.

In the first book, the crabs massacre Shell Island, whupping the military base like people in Overwatch has been whupping me when I act as if the team will stay together. This one happen simultaneously. Turns out there's an island just nearby with a crazily-defensible theme park run by an American millionaire so slimy he could've a murderer on Columbo. Then the movie has him do it again and reuses the same footage it just played a handful of seconds ago. I didn’t find Night of the Crabs the most thrilling read and it will never make my top-ten list of favourite books. It was okay though and I did find it an entertaining read, if not quite what I had expected.

Safely inside of the castle. Karen is sitting upon the American Goodreads throne, and Caris is standing by her. The two look already immersed in conversation as the upper half of Eh!'s body teleports in.)Verdict: No other book about giant crabs invading Wales could possibly compare to Night of the Crabs. It is a gross literary injustice that this book is not on the list of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. In trying to describe the invulnerability of the Crabs to the inept military leaders, the Prof says, “You haven’t seen these monsters. If you had, you’d know what I mean. I’d have to see ’em blown to smithereens with my own eyes before I’d believe they’re not invincible.”...This, of course, is a classic restatement of the scientific method. Brian stood in Karen's throne room, his scientist getup on, to make sure everyone knew he was the scientist. "I tell you!" he told them, "There's only one way to get rid of these crabs!" I don’t, I can’t believe it!” Pat Benson was close to hysteria. “It’s just not possible! It’s a nightmare! Cliff, please tell me it isn’t real!”

Smith tries to make up for the absence of horror by throwing in more sex, but that’s fairly tame too (or at least boringly vanilla) and often unintentionally hilarious. His habit of using character’s full names doesn’t help. An all-out war ensues, with the monstrous crustaceans now swarming onto the helpless community of Shell Island. The military presence on Shell Island is almost completely annihilated by these seemingly indestructible freaks of nature. I'm not sure if it was an editing issue, or if the original text was messed up, but there are a lot of weird things going on in the Kindle edition with exclamation points, capitalized letters in the middle of sentences and other things like that. Dead Meat (1996) (omnibus of the first four books plus two new Sabat stories, Vampire Village and Hellbeat) An all out war ensues, with the monstrous crustaceans now swarming onto the helpless community of Shell Island. The military presence on Shell Island is almost completely annihilated by these seemingly indestructible freaks of nature.Der Ruf des Werwolfs (1976) (originally published in German only; published by Erich Pabel as a part of their "Vampir Horror Roman") Oh goodness gracious, this is the most fun I'm had reading a book since I don't know when. Sorry Mr. Strand, you're just going to have to bow down to the author of Night of the Crabs.
