About this deal

In the early days, most gladiators were prisoners or enslaved people from places that Rome was fighting wars with. And what you wore when you fought in a gladiator contest depended on where you came from. There were three main sorts: Samnites (from Italy), Gauls (from France) and Thracians (from what is now Bulgaria). And they hadn’t quite made it to arenas yet. Those original funeral fights usually took place in Rome’s cattle market. Let’s hope they avoided a pat on the head. They were the pop stars of their day

Museo del Arma Blanca". Archived from the original on October 25, 2006 . Retrieved December 15, 2006. A recent metallurgical study of two Etrurian swords, one in the form of a Greek kopis from 7th century BC Vetulonia, the other in the form of a gladius Hispaniensis from 4th century BC Clusium ( Chiusi), gives insight concerning the manufacture of Roman swords. [17] The Chiusi sword comes from Romanized etruria; thus, regardless of the names of the forms (which the authors do not identify), the authors believe the process was continuous from the Etruscans to the Romans. The hoplomachii ("armored fighters") wore a helmet and basic arm and leg protection, a small round shield called a parmula, a gladius, a short dagger known as a pugio, and a gladius graecus, a leaf-shaped sword used only by them.

Arguments for the Celtiberian source of the weapon have been reinforced in recent decades by discovery of early Roman gladii that seem to highlight that they were copies of Celtiberian models. The weapon developed in Iberia after La Tène I models, which were adapted to traditional Celtiberian techniques during the late 4th and early 3rd centuries BC. [14] These weapons are quite original in their design, so that they cannot be confused with Gallic types. As for the origin of the word gladius, one theory proposes the borrowing of the word from * kladi- during the Gallic wars, relying on the principle that K often became G in Latin. Ennius attests the word gladius may have replaced ensis, which until then was used mainly by poets. M. C. Bishop (2016). The Gladius: The Roman Short Sword (in Spanish). Bloomsbury Publishing. ISBN 978-14-728158-6-6. A rudis is a wooden sword received by a gladiator who achieved earning his freedom or retirement. It was carried with him as proof of his accent from slavery and that he was now a freeman. The ex-gladiator now referred to as a rudiarii was now free to retire or seek other employment. Many rudiarii would continue to work as a manager, trainer or referee in the gladiatorial sport. Some would even choose to fight in the arena to continue their former glory they achieved as a slave. These rudiarii were the most successful and most achieved confident gladiators that were highly skilled and feared by all that would face them. Freedom from Slavery The Roman short sword was further reduced to around 42 to 55 centimeters, making it a lighter and faster weapon. The Pompeii gladius would serve the Roman Army until the mid-2nd century CE before the longer sword spatha replaced it. Gladiators (Latin for Swordsman) were armed combatants from the Roman Empire who entertained audiences in the amphitheatre, the most famous of which was the Colosseum in Rome. Some gladiators were Roman citizens who desired fame and glory but most were slaves or criminals. Gladiators symbolised Rome’s martial ethics in fighting and dying well and they were celebrated in both high and low art. There are 19 amphitheatres in Britain, some of the most famous and best preserved are at Chester, Caerleon and St. Albans. Modern English words derived from gladius include gladiator ("swordsman") and gladiolus ("little sword", from the diminutive form of gladius), a flowering plant with sword-shaped leaves. With a blade length of about 48 centimeters, it is similar to its Roman predecessor but with a heavy blade, making it used less for combat. In 1831, the French produced a new version and it was later copied by the Americans. The Roman Gladius Sword in Modern Times The overall length of the Sica sword, including the handle, is around 16 to 20 inches long (40 to 50 cm). This puts the Sica in the shortsword category, which was a very common type of weapon in ancient times. Not everyone was walking around wielding greatswords. The widest part of the Sica is around 1.2 inches (3 cm); usually, the widest part is where the blade starts curving. Weight

The Romans believed that their short sword originated in Iberia, a region in Europe occupied by Portugal and Spain. Hence, the name “ gladius Hispaniensis ” suggests its Spanish origin. The Celtiberian ‘antenna’ swords, along with a Castilian La Tène sword, were likely the inspiration for the Roman short sword. Our Roman Gladiator Sword is crafted in the world famous Art Gladius factory in Toledo, Spain. The gilded hilt is heavily adorned with Roman style reliefs and features the letters SPQR (Senātus Populus que Rōmānus) on the guard. The large pommel is topped with an Imperial Eagle (Aquila). The Pompeii style stainless steel blade is richly adorned with engravings. This sword is designed for display only. By the Early Imperial Period, the blade length of the gladius sword was reduced in size but retained the shape of the gladius Hispaniensis. The size reduction was probably due to the way the Roman infantry fought. These were the Mainz-Fulham gladii the Romans used through Augustus’ years of territorial expansion. The hilt of a Roman sword was the capulus. It was often ornate, especially the sword-hilts of officers and dignitaries. The Functional Spiculus Gladiator Sword is the perfect weapon for those who wish to immerse themselves in the time of the Roman gladiators. Crafted with precision and attention to detail, this gladius is true to historical authenticity, but has also been enhanced for exceptional performance on the battlefield.

The weapons of the ancient Gladiators of Rome were their tools of the trade. If you were to put a gladius sword into the hands of well trained gladiator, you had a killing machine capable of ending a man with a single blow. Every time the gladiator stepped into the amphitheatre, they risked not only their lives but put their trust in their weapons and arms.
