About this deal

The Impact and Legacy of Che Guevara’s Foco Theory, with Special Reference to Guerrilla Warfare in Colombia by Leeds University The hospital Nuestro Señor de Malta (Our Lord of Malta) is preserved there, as well as its famous laundry where the bodies of Che Guevara and some of his men were shown to the public. This was the place where the famous photographs were taken by Freddy Alborta, a Bolivian photographer and documentary filmmaker. They show a dead Guevara with his eyes open, an image that evokes those of Jesus Christ. [4] The success of the Cuban revolution at the dawn of 1959 propelled the main figures, the Castro brothers, Fidel and Raul, as well as the Argentinean Guevara to worldwide attention Many further articles featured the ‘young Argentine physician’, who, now tasked with transforming the Cuban economy, was becoming a focal point for western media, who spoke of him in terms of exoticism, intelligence, and as a dangerous influence. The Irish Independent again drew attention to his rising star, noting his pan-Latin American goals, which he hoped could become ‘another China’. [10]

Shortly after Castro’s victory over Batista, Cuba’s new leader put Guevara in charge of La Cabaña Fortress, a prison on the eastern bank of the entrance to Havana Harbor. It was Guevara’s job to oversee the tribunals and sentences of Batista’s captured soldiers. His own writings support this view. Describing a moment when a brother-in-arms was accused of treason, Guevara wrote: “The situation was uncomfortable for the people…so I ended the problem by giving him a shot with a .32 pistol in the right side of the brain.” But nowhere is he remembered more fondly than in Cuba, the country whose history he changed forever. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as Che Guevara, was born on 14 June 1928 in Rosario, Argentina into a middle-class family. He studied medicine at Buenos Aires University and during this time travelled widely in South and Central America. The widespread poverty and oppression he witnessed, fused with his interest in Marxism, convinced him that the only solution to South and Central America's problems was armed revolution.

Did you know? Che Guevara has been the subject of a number of films, including “The Motorcycle Diaries,” which was based in part on Che's own account of hisnine-month journey across South America in 1951–52, an experience that shaped his leftist beliefs.

World War One Centenary

Che Guevara was soon made Castro’s second-in-command and given a column of his own. He would lead them through the decisive moment of the war: the Battle of Santa Clara. Che was adopted by militants Irish republicans as a figure of inspiration during the conflict in Northern Ireland.
