The final flight of the competition, South Africa, saw five Silver medals go to Heineken Beverages for its Bain’s and Three Ships brands. The Silver medallists were: Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, and Three Ships’ Bourbon Cask Whisky, 5 Year Old Premium Select, 6 Year Old Chenin Blanc Cask Finish, 12 Year Old, and 10 Year Old Single Malt. So there we have it. Two whiskies I haven’t tried before and wouldn’t have otherwise gone for. I’m looking forward to December to find out what else is hiding behind these little windows of joy each morning.

This award-winning single malt whisky from Oregon’s Westward Whiskey is the whiskey that started the American single malt bandwagon. Made using locally-sourced malted barley and aged in new, charred American oak barrels, in hot dry summers and cold, wet winters, it’s known for its welcoming nose of toasted vanilla beans, butterscotch and spices as well as its palate of malts, buttery caramel, dried cherries, and wintry spices. The finish is a warming mix of chocolate, fresh leather, and gentle spices. If you only try one American-made single malt whiskey, make it this one. There’s a reason it consistently ranks as one of the best single malts in the US. Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique Single Malt | Image: Kent Street Cellars 3. Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique Single Malt (Taiwan) Nova borrows from tradition but breaks away from it too. This whisky’s distinctly delicious flavour all starts with our new-make spirit. The panels swapped Australasia for North America as Canadian whiskies were sipped next. Two Masters were given to Proximo Spirits for its Pendleton Original and Pendleton Midnight whiskies.

Due to the strict requirements of the production process, the Scotch Whisky Association has confirmed that there are only five recognised whisky producing regions defined in the Scotch Whisky Regulations, each protected in law by UK legislation – the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009. These include Speyside, Islay, Highlands, Lowlands and Campbeltown. Matt Chambers, whisky and spirits writer, and co-founder of the Whisky For Everyone blog, chaired a team consisting of: Renata Ma, of Grain & Glass, and a whisky specialist; and Herchelle Perez Terrado, founder of Drinks Partnership. Closures producer Talis was the official sponsor of The World Whisky Masters But enough of that. Leave any gripes about the vacuousness of late capitalism at the calendar door. This isn’t a lament on the state of the modern Western world. I’d take chocolate over chalk every day of the December week.

Think about the phrase “single malt whisky” for a few seconds. What images does it conjure in your mind? We’re willing to bet the first (and likely only) images you see in your mind’s eye are those of Scotch whisky, right? This would be due to both the prowess of Scottish-made whisky as well as its advertising. But just because single malt whisky is big in Scotland doesn’t mean that’s the only place it’s produced. In fact, search around long enough and you’ll realise some of the best single-malt whiskies come from some quite unexpected lands. Best Single Malts Not From Scotland: By CountryTwenty-two Gold medals were also awarded by the judges, including seven for Lark, five for Starward and four for Copper and Grain Distilling Co. Lark’s Rebellion whisky was described as having “cinnamon and aniseed, with some citrus and apricot compote”, while one judge enjoyed Starward Rum Cask Release IV for its “huge spice and fruitcake notes”. The first category to be put to the test was blended whiskies from Europe, where three Master medallists were discovered.

A lone entry from Japan, Small Batch Pure Malt Hatozaki, secured the top Master accolade. Chou found notes of “oat, bread, toast, porridge, raisin, plum, and vanilla”, with a “good balance of sweetness and spiciness” on the palate, and a “rich and rounded texture”. Starward has three whiskies in its core lineup, along with other rotating limited offerings. For the broadest picture of the distillery's output, I tried the three core bottles along with the latest limited offering, all of which are described below.

Starward Nova – Review

Other Gold medallists included Forty Creek Barrel Select Whisky, with its notes of chocolate, coconut cream and rice pudding, and Signal Hill Whisky, lauded for its “baked almond cake, peanuts, and custard chocolate cream”. Two Silvers were also awarded. I am a little disappointed that this release was initially aged in a red wine cask from the Barossa Valley before being finished in a charred American oak hogshead. For better or worse, I was looking forward to the unfiltered red wine cask experience.
