About this deal

Studies in healthy volunteers show that cetirizine, at doses of 5 and 10 mg strongly inhibits the wheal and flare reactions induced by very high concentrations of histamine into the skin, but the correlation with efficacy is not established. Zirtek allergy tablets contain 10mg cetirizine and are suitable for adults and children aged six years and over. How do Zirtek allergy tablets work? Zirtek allergy tablets contain the active ingredient cetirizine dihydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a non-sedating antihistamine. to <1/100); rare (≥1/10,000 to <1/1,000); very rare (<1/10,000), not known (cannot be estimated from the available data)

Treating a chronic itchy nettle-type rash where the cause isn't known (chronic idiopathic urticaria).

Antihistamines may oppose the effect of histamine (used to treat leukaemia) and are not recommended for people having this treatment. Antihistamines may also oppose the effect of betahistine (used to treat Ménière's disease) so this medicine is probably best avoided by people taking betahistine.Elderly: Following a single 10 mg oral dose, half-life increased by about 50% and clearance decreased by 40% in 16 elderly subjects compared to younger subjects. The decrease in cetirizine clearance in these elderly volunteers appeared to be related to their decreased renal function. The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily as one tablet daily. If the tablets make you feel drowsy or dizzy, taking half a tablet twice a day may be better than taking one tablet once a day.

Response to allergy skin tests are inhibited by antihistamines and a wash-out period (of 3 days) is required before performing them. Although cetirizine is a non-sedating antihistamine, occasionally some people may find it makes them feel slightly sleepy. Make sure you know how this medicine affects you before doing potentially hazardous activities such as driving, riding bikes or operating machines. If you do find this medicine makes you sleepy you should avoid drinking alcohol or using other medicines that cause drowsiness with it, as this could make any sleepiness or reduced alertness worse.

You can take a dose of this medicine as needed to relieve occasional allergy symptoms once they've started. Or you can take it in anticipation of getting allergy symptoms, for instance you can take a dose before leaving the house if you know there will be a high pollen count, or if you're visiting friends with a pet you're allergic to. You can also take it regularly every day to prevent symptoms, for example during the pollen season. No dose adjustment is needed in patients with solely hepatic impairment. In patients with hepatic impairment and renal impairment, adjustment of the dose is recommended (see Renal impairment above).
