A "GTi" variant, prepared in a microwave instead of adding boiling water, was introduced at the end of the 2000s and was the first Pot Noodle to contain real meat. In 2007, the brand changed their logo. The Pot Noodle brand is owned by Unilever, a company that sourced 99.6% of its palm oil sustainably in 2019 [ source]. Unilever is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and is working to drive change within the palm oil industry. There are twelve flavours of Pot Noodles to choose from, as well as three flavours Pot Noodle Fusions, five flavours of the potless ‘Lost The Pot Noodle’ and four flavours in the ‘Asian Street Style’ sister brand. Things like soy sauce, for instance, in theory could be non-vegan. The same with maltodextrin and sugar. But the one Pot Noodle flavour that is definitely vegan friendly – the Asian Street Style Japanese Miso Noodle Soup flavour – contains all those, so they can’t be the culprits.Despite a high-calorie count, pot noodles are not very filling, so if you are trying to lose weight, they are not a healthy choice as you’ll soon feel hungry again after eating one. The thing is, the aforementioned Miso Soup flavour Pot Noodle also carries a warning that it “may contain egg and milk”, so it is unlikely to be the cross-contamination risk that is stopping the other flavours being presented as vegan. In truth, this is all very confusing and seemingly contradictory, because the Miso Soup product is certified as vegan and proudly sold as such. We suspect this may well be a similar scenario as M&S’s (in)famous vegan range which was controversially labelled with the same allergy warning in 2019. Though a homemade dish will of course rarely taste like its processed equivalent, I have to admit that this recipe comes pretty damn close.
