About this deal

Iceland is a fantastic country, rich in geothermal spa experiences! Whether you want another high-end spa day or you want to hit the city pools with the locals, you have plenty of choices both in Reykjavik and around the country. Even though the last slot of the day is not as popular, the lagoon will likely remain full as there's no time limit. How long to spend at the Blue Lagoon depends on you, though most people opt to spend at least two hours.

Seltun is a colorful area featuring bright yellow-, orange-, red- and green-toned earth. It has a wooden path that snakes past boiling mud pots, hot springs, and hissing fumaroles, and many educational signs in the area. Of course, you will want to take plenty of photos for memories and to show off to your friends what a great time you had! Cameras of any kind are allowed into the Blue Lagoon, including DSLRs. You will want to be careful to avoid water damage and do NOT leave expensive equipment lying around! Winter is the slowest time of year for tourism in Iceland. If you want to experience a quieter Iceland, I highly recommend visiting during the winter. Keep in mind that it’s a cheaper time to visit, flights will likely be less expensive, and fewer tours and activities will be available. The Blue Lagoon is about a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital. This close proximity makes the lagoon a perfect day trip from the city if that is where you are staying. If you are only in Iceland for a stop-over, the lagoon is only about 15 minutes from the Keflavik Airport. It’s not really recommended to bring your phone or camera into the Blue Lagoon either, but it looks like a lot of people bring those anyway. We prefer to hold tight to our glasses of wine than risk losing our iPhones in the lagoon, but influencers MUST influence, and they’re influencing everywhere we look. If you’re only visiting Iceland for a few days, you can save time and money by booking day tours that include multiple activities in a day. Not a bad way to combine a Blue Lagoon tour with another activity! Here are some suggestions: Reykjavik Beer and Booze Tour— Head out to three cool bars in Reykjavik, led by a guide and surrounded by new friends, tasting Icelandic beers, schnapps, and spirits you never would have known about otherwise. A fun way to enjoy booze in a pricey country. Bath salts, body lotion, foot balm, foot scrub, hand cream, home treatment sets, lava scrubs, mineral face exfoliators, day cream, night cream, moisturizing cream, eye cream, lip balm, shampoo, bath oil, body oil - you name it, they've got it!

Once you’re rinsed and your hair is conditioned, you can put your bathing suit on and head on into the Blue Lagoon. Should you book the Blue Lagoon before or after your flight to Iceland? The Reykjanes Peninsula has its fair share of geothermal areas. The most well-known, geothermally-active ones are Seltun in Krysuvik, near lake Kleifarvatn, and Gunnuhver, closer to the Blue Lagoon and the town of Grindavik. Entering will take some time as you may need to wait in line for your key, then undress and shower. After enjoying a soak in the lagoon, you might want to take your time getting cleaned up, too.

Take my advice — even if you condition your hair, don’t let it touch the water. You’re not missing out on much if you don’t. You can choose to wear a swim cap if you’d like, but it’s still better to keep your head dry. The Blue Lagoon has several spa amenities available to all guests. These include the silica mud mask, sauna and steam rooms, a human-made waterfall, a relaxation cave, an in-water bar, the option to book an in-water massage, and an indoor relaxation area with a view over the lagoon itself. Because we live in weird times, my experience will be slightly different to those before and after 2020 (let’s hope so, at least). There’re less tourists in Iceland right now and there’s a limit on how many people may enter the lagoon. There was a short line at the entrance, but many counters were staffed and everything proceeded smoothly. Explanations for first-time visitors are lengthy, though. (A great account general Blue Lagoon info is here.)

This is an absolute requirement at every swimming pool and geothermal spa in Iceland. You must be naked. It is the height of rudeness to shower in your bathing suit. Icelanders take cleanliness in pools very seriously. However, don’t plan to get images of the Blue Lagoon at night underneath a dark sky. If you visit during the summer months, midnight in July will only be a bit dusky; frankly, it will be a lot darker in late December at 5:00 PM. Speaking personally, I think combining the Blue Lagoon with the Golden Circle is a great way to spend a day in Iceland. Your hair will get DESTROYED at the Blue Lagoon. The weather in Iceland is unreliable at best and can change at a moment’s notice. But, no matter the weather, a trip to the Blue Lagoon Iceland is worth it! Whether it is sunny and clear-skied or gloomy and rainy, the warm water will lull you into relaxation. Plus, bad weather can create a cool, foggy mood. Once you’ve tried the Blue Lagoon, you may be up for trying more of Iceland’s fantastic hot springs — including the Sky Lagoon. Enjoying the Sky Lagoon in 2022! Sky Lagoon IcelandAfter the invigorating scrub, you can choose between being wrapped in either silica or algae while enjoying a gentle massage on your face and scalp. But, Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is also beautiful and interesting, totally unique, easy to get to, and possibly the best damn time you’ll have this close to the Arctic Circle. Both masks are natural and great for your skin! They will leave your skin glowing, nourished, and moisturized. The algae mask especially is great for anti-aging. Leave the masks on for about five to ten minutes before rinsing them off. I am a huge fan of the Sky Lagoon, which opened in April 2021. This spa is much closer to Reykjavik (about a 15-minute drive from downtown) and it’s a more luxurious, more adult-oriented experience, all gray and misty and overlooking the ocean. You can see my full review of the Sky Lagoon here. The water is a byproduct from the nearby geothermal power plant Svartsengi where superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity. After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal water heating system. Then the water is fed into the lagoon. Wikipedia
