About this deal

Once all players have finished drawing their cards, the guardian Animals phase ends and you can move on to the Action phase. Plant one and only one Protective Tree: Add up the amount of leaves and take one, and only one, Protective Tree for a total cost equal to or lower than your number of leaves. Place it in your Forest, on a space adjacent to a Protective Tree already planted. Diagonal spaces do not count. Reminder: having 12 different Protective Trees is a way to win the game. Draw Guardian Animals. If you draw 3 solitary symbols (top-left of the Guardian Animals cards) you cannot draw anymore (unless you've drawn gregarious symbols). You only get to use 1 standard Action (there are ways in the next phase to get bonus Actions). If you stop at a point where you have less then 3 solitary symbols, you get to use 2 standard different Actions. Solitary symbols can be canceled by gregarious symbols . So 3 solitary symbols - 1 gregarious symbol = 2 solitary symbols = 2 different standard Actions. But how do you go about accomplishing these goals? First, let’s set up the game and grasp what the components look like on your tabletop. Setting Up The Game

If your Help Line shows less than 3 solitary symbols (not counting the ones canceled by gregarious symbols), you can then perform 2 different Actions. For example, in your Help Line are 3 solitary symbols and 1 gregarious symbol, then only 2 solitary symbols count and you get 2 Actions. Each turn you reveal your Guardian Animal cards one by one, trying to get the best combination of elements possible to perform your two actions. Be careful, if three Lone Animals are played, you can only perform one.The game will be played in successive rounds until someone has achieved one of the three victory conditions: 12 different Protective trees on their board, 12 Fire tiles in their collection, 12 Sacred Flowers in the Help Line. Handily, there are some powerful Guardian Animals with special elements that can help you defeat Onibi. And there are three separate ways that flame thrower can be thwarted.

The card and board art matches seamlessly with the base game and I love the addon to your player board explaining the kodama symbols bonuses. Components are of an equally high standard and having a figure for Onibi chasing you around the circle spreading more fire makes it feel like there is a real battle for the forest. You can only ever take one Tree per action. Across the game you can take two identical Trees if you want (if you want to double up on certain Tree’s element bonuses). Note that you need 12 different Protective Trees to trigger a victory condition. (Not 12 Trees total.)With 3 take an element tile – these give a bonus whenever you play them. Immediately add 2 suns/ 2 water droplets/ 2 trees/ 1 scared flower/ 1 move. The tile is discarded after use. Each tree has a symbol and number on it. Once placed, this tree provides a permanent bonus to you. You add up this alongside the symbols in your Help Line. As the game progresses and you have more trees, you can achieve bigger and better actions. It’s like you’re building an engine out of trees. A metaphorical engine, of course. You’re not the one deforesting… That’s the role of naughty, burny Onibi. Take a Fragment Tile – take a Fragment tile from the supply to use in a later Guardian Animal Phase Each turn has 3 phases and up to 2 actions to perform. Your main task is to choose the winning way! Phase 1: Guardian Animals Chad Wilkinson from Tabletop Gaming recommended the game, and praised the mixture of mechanisms, replayability, player interaction, and component quality, but critiqued the setup time. Jonathan (5+ plays) : I really like this game, enough so that after a few plays on BGA, I went and bought a copy. I said ‘love it’ in this review because the game takes ~5-7 rounds and each round, each player takes two out of the five possible actions, but some of them chain, so you can move around the rondel which lets you get a tree, which lets you get some fire tokens. Although it is one action, that sequence lets you take three actions with one. It has enough choice each turn without out staying its welcome and has led to memorable moments and surprises, such as thinking you are winning and then realize your victory next turn will be a turn too late. You do need to pay attention to what the other players are doing, as there might be certain actions you want to avoid taking because they will set up an opponent. I did not feel there was too much take-that, which I dislike, but for those who don’t like it, I am confident a variant will be found. As an aside, I like the colors green and blue., so I found the game beautiful as well. Plant one Protective Tree – Using your green sprout points, buy a tile and place it on your board adjacent to a previously placed tile. Each tile instantly provides you extra elements or perhaps the ability to perform the same action twice. If you fill a row or column, you will get an additional bonus for that. If you plant a tree in the corner, you will get the immediate one-time bonus shown in that space. By placing a Protective Tree on specific corners you gain a specific extra Action.This is also a lovely production. Living Forest features two nice token holders for all the trees, and the central board and standees match the theme really well. The stand out component though is probably the set of guardian animal cards, which features a whole host of beautifully serene creatures who all emit an element of bio-luminescence. Many of these have cute characteristics and a kind of charm that makes them extremely appealing to look at in detail, and whilst the theme could have applied in space, or a medieval village or more or less anywhere else, the overall forest aesthetic is lovely. Planting a Protective Tree in a corner triggers an immediate bonus Action. This can only be used once per corner. I love the idea that tree spirits can be summoned to help protect the forest and it also means that scared flowers have a far more important role. Previously they seems only to be a tie breaker when more than one player achieved 12 fire tokens or 12 protective trees. Move forward on the circle of spirits. Add up the amount of spirit elements you have and move forward that amount of spaces. This will gain you victory points.
