About this deal

This attractive Photinia full standard tree is used often for evergreen screening because it is tall, above the fence line and has such attractive foliage and pretty white flowers in late spring, early summer. Some species need neutral or acid conditions, so will not grow well in chalky/alkaline soil. They can also be grown in large containers if your soil is unsuitable. Seeour guide to understandingsoil pH. Feathered tree: Branches from the bottom of the trunk all the way up. These branches can be removed if a clear stem is required. There are several species to choose from, offering colourful seasonal foliage displays, clusters of small white flowers and red berries. They suit many styles of garden, either formal or informal, large or small, and can be grown as specimen trees or shrubs, hedgesand wall shrubs. For the best results, plant for Photinia Red Robin hedges in a sunny spot, while being careful not to crowd them in too much with other plants, in good well-drained soil. They thrive best when they have plenty of sunlight and space, and are super easy to care for!

Red Robin trees can be pruned hard at any time without damage as they are considered the Rambo equivalent of trees. This is one of the reasons why it has been awarded the RHS Award Of Garden Merit. We strongly advise you to prune hard for at least the next couple of seasons for trees below 2m or 4 years old. This will force your Red Robin to bush out even more. This will also ensure that older growth is not long and spindly which would make it prone to snow loading and wind damage. Your Red Robin tree may turn up looking scalped, this is because we have hard pruned it for you. Prune up to three times a year making the last one around August to ensure new growth is not subjected to cold and frosts. Why Choose us

We have now started using a new type of pot with many of our trees, and these new containers are called 'slot pots'. This type of pot is much better than the conventional container because it is specifically designed to stop the roots from spiraling in the pot, and thus preventing the tree from becoming pot bound. The slot pots create a healthy root system that is perfect for re-planting, which therefore encourages your newly-planted trees to settle into their new environment. Fireblight–this bacterial disease causes shoots to shrivel and die. It can occasionally affect certain photinia species, including P. villosa and P. davidiana Photinia x fraseri, commonly known as Photinia Red Robin, is a popular evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its vibrant red young leaves, which provide year-round interest in gardens and landscapes. Here are some key features and care guidelines for Photinia Red Robin: GIVES NEW PLANTS THE BEST POSSIBLE START - Apply rootgrow by sprinking the appropriate amount into the planting hole, then place the plant in the hole ensuring the roots are touching the granules. Once applied your plants will begin to thrive better than before, improving plant establishment and subsequently bettering flowering and fruiting. Corymbs of flowers typically appear in early summer for further interest and are occasionally followed by small fruits that birds enjoy eating. Planting & Growing Photinia

Yellowing leaves due to nutrient deficiency on alkaline soil –some species, including Photiniabeauverdiana, need neutral or acidic soil Heights/width are a guideline only. Girth is a much more accurate method of establishing maturity i.e. larger canopy and root system. It is very easy to not prune a Photinia Red Robin and leave it in a greenhouse giving you a very tall and leggy plant that will snap from the first storm. Each girth increment e.g. 6-8cm to 8-10cm represents around 12-18 months of growth and is the measurement of the trunk diameter at a given point. For the first year, water well and regularly in spring and summer. Increase watering in hot or dry weather. When planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. We sell irrigation kits for use in the ground or in pots.

Instant Hedging

Red Robin doesn’t like to be lying in water so if the area you want to plant them in is wet, you may need to consider draining the ground or making a mound/ditch of top soil on top of the ground and plant them into this. If you want unusual foliage, the 'Red Robin' is the perfect choice. The elliptic leaves are finely serrated at their margins and fresh foliage shoots through as a brilliant red colour. The leaves mature to a dark green, but as new foliage continues to emerge red you get a real contrast of colours over the spring period. Mid-spring also sees the arrival of clusters of pretty white flowers, which add further interest. Come autumn, the leaves mature to a bronzed green, which adds great interest over the winter months. Mature Height and Width: Consider the mature height and width of the Photinia Red Robin variety you are planting. Some varieties can grow taller and wider than others. Be sure to choose a spacing that allows the plants to reach their mature size without crowding or excessive pruning. If you have planted large root balled hedging, if your water conditions are correct, it may be the plant reacting to its change of environment and is under a little stress, but once it gets going it should be ok. The plant is generally under stress if the foliage has purple/brown spotting. A cold winter may also cause a more mature plant to be stressed. Hunger:

Full or partial sun and sheltered with moist but free-draining soil. If you have heavy clay, mix with 50% well-rotted manure or compost. Suitable for almost any soil types. The name Photinia comes from the Greek word for shiny, in respect to their leaves. Their common name is Christmas Berry tree because of the small fruits that are sometimes present from autumn until Christmas. Photinia × fraseri varieties are also known as Red Tip Photinia.
