Askeladd and his band of Vikings, including a young teen named Thorfinn, assist a general in a skirmish between two Frankish tribes, leaving with the treasury's contents after they win. Thorfinn earns himself a duel with Askeladd after he brings him the defending commander's head. Askeladd gets Thorfinn to lose his cool and Thorfinn loses the duel. Thorfinn's childhood in Iceland is explored. In 1002 A.D., when Thorfinn is six, the visiting Greenlander Leif Ericson tells him and the village children of his travels to Vinland. Shortly after, Thorfinn's sister Ylva finds a half frozen slave in the snow. Halfdan comes to village to reclaim his runaway slave, but Thorfinn's father Thors buys him for eight sheep. Thors and his family bury the slave when he dies later that day. Floki and the Jomsvikings come to the village, demanding that Thors "The Troll of Jom" join them in upcoming the Danish invasion of England, despite his desertion fifteen years prior. I do continue to really enjoy the amazing illustration and the amount of time Yukimura spends delving into the history of the story. The inserts in between volumes showing a map of Thorfinn's travels and descriptions about what was happening historically at that time are incredibly well done. Retrieved February 6, 2019. Okay so first of all based on the cover I thought that this was a more fun, family friendly adventure manga... don’t judge a book by it’s cover! While not particularly graphic or anything (this is a hard PG-13 or mild R) this is a gritty viking tale. I will admit I don’t know a pile about vikings (though know a bit) so while I may have missed some historical inaccuracies, this did seem fairly historically accurate based on what I know of vikings.

Upon arriving at Lord Gorm's village to winter, Thorfinn and Askeladd have their duel, but Askeladd gets Thorfinn to lose his cool and the latter easily loses the duel despite his skills. Thorfinn speaks to a slave and recalls his childhood in Iceland, recalling a visiting Leif Ericson telling him and the other village children of his travels to Vinland. Askeladd and his men land in England near the Humber River to resupply and they pillage a local village. Thorfinn scrambles ashore and during the night prepares to kill the sleeping Askeladd but cannot do it. Thorfinn trains alone in the woods before emerging to challenge Askeladd to a duel. Thorfinn is easily defeated again, but Askeladd recognizes his strength and promises Thorfinn a chance to fight him again should he prove himself in battle. The characters are very well made and believable in their motivations, every one of them with a interesting and complex story arc. The whole picture of the story is more complex and well made than expected, with a bigger scope on events than you could think of at a first glance, with a lot of surprises at hand.
