About this deal

For more about The Wastes of Eriador, the Valour trigger, and the Angmar Awakened cycle, we turn to lead developer Matthew Newman. Lead Developer Matthew Newman on Angmar Awakened EDIT - I got an official answer from Tyler Parrott on this (from the January 25th livestream playthhrough of an Angmar quest on their YouTube channel, about 1 hour in). Edited the post as a future resource.

What roads would any dare to tread, what safety would there be in quiet lands, or in the homes of simple men at night, if the Dúnedain were asleep, or were all gone into the grave?” – Aragorn, The Fellowship of the Ring In addition to a gripping story, the Campaign Expansion also includes some gameplay mechanics that help the scenarios stand apart from those of the Revised Core Set. For example, in several scenarios you may find yourselves traveling with the Dúnedain allies Iârion Angmar Awakened CE, 1) or Amarthiúl Angmar Awakened CE, 2). While handy to have around, you must also keep them healthy, because if either of them is defeated, you lose the game! The western lands of Eriador have long remained peaceful under the vigilance of the Rangers of the North. Yet no grave can contain the evil forces of Angmar which lurk in wild and ancient places, stretching the valorous Dúnedain rangers far and thin in their duty to protect the land. With the awakening of this evil, it is up to a group of brave heroes to face the dire force head-on and protect Middle-earth from its shadow.

Will You Aid the Rangers of the North?

Now, in The Wastes of Eriador, several of Middle-earth’s heroes must join forces with the noble Dúnedain who have long guarded the region’s simpler folk from the untold evils that still reside within Carn Dûm and its environs. Following immediately upon the heels of the epic events that unfold in The Lost Realm deluxe expansion, the scenario from The Wastes of Eriador tasks you to rescue a captive Ranger. However, as you pursue the enemies who have captured him, your trail leads you ever northward, ever deeper into the hills of Angmar. There, as day fades into night, the howling of wolves suggest that your party of hunters may soon become the hunted… But always I have let my horn cry at setting forth, and though thereafter we may walk in the shadows, I will not go forth as a thief in the night.” In September of 2021, we revealed the Revised Core Set for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game in our Gen Con 2021 In-Flight Report. This game is FFG’s longest-running card game, and even though there were no “new” expansions on the horizon, we still wanted to support the LCG and provide opportunities for new players to finally take the plunge. Two classic cycles for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game are being reimagined in a new set of expansions. Each campaign is its own self-contained experience. The boons, burdens, and other modifications earned in a campaign do not carry over into other games or campaigns, unless explicitly stated by a card ability (such as the Resolution effect on the Campaign Card for Escape from Dol Guldur)."

Even if you have no interest in the heroes, allies, or other player cards of the Hero Expansion, you can still look forward to a thrilling campaign in the Angmar Awakened Campaign Expansion! In the Angmar Awakened Campaign Expansion, players will find a storyline built from the original The Lost Realm and Angmar Awakened cycles. In the expansion, players will be initially aiding the Dúnedain in hunting some roaming orcs, before things start to escalate further beyond anyone expected. Eventually, players will be going up against entire war parties of orcs and wraiths, until experiencing a final showdown in the capital of Angmar. Whilst the side quest cards in the Hero Expansion offer nice optional incentives for players, the side quest cards in the Campaign Expansion will result in something bad if they’re not dealt with – drastically changing the motivation behind completing them. With great discoveries and lost ruins to be found, only you and your fellow heroes can safely guide the Dream-chaser and its fleet throughout its voyage. Whether you missed the original version of the Dream-chaser cycle or are just now getting into The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, you can look forward to adding the Dream-chaser Hero Expansion and Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion to your collection when they both release this summer!

Unlike Secrecy cards, which benefit you when your threat is twenty or less, Valour cards benefit you when your threat is forty or higher. This is typically later in the game, when you have already built up your strength and resources aren’t quite as much of an issue. So instead of offering effects at a discounted cost, these cards offer powerful effects that can only be triggered when your threat is forty or higher. Meanwhile, the cycle’s new player cards take The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game in several different, all-new directions. For example, in previous cycles we’ve seen various Secrecy cards that reward players for keeping their threat low, hiding from enemies, and sneaking their way through locations and around obstacles. But what about those heroes of Middle-earth who choose to face Sauron’s forces head on, confronting them face-to-face upon the field of battle? For those who do not shy away from risk and danger, we introduce a new ability trigger – Valour. Whether or not you heed the call of the Hero Expansion, you can still look forward to a high seas adventure in the Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion!Following are some Spoilers for the end of the Campaigns from the core set and Dark of Mirkwood expansion, together called the "Mirkwood Paths" campaign) Mendor - a 1/1/1 character with ranged who lets every player draw a card after completing a quest card, including side quests! Plus he readies after completing a quest. Whilst the Hero Expansion will only contain content already found in the original Angmar Awakened and The Lost Realm cycles, the Campaign Expansion will feature some entirely new scenarios. Both expansions will require players have a copy of either the original core set or the recently released Revised Core Set for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. In addition to its new scenario, The Wastes of Eriador also contains a new hero and three copies each of nine different player cards. In the lands traveled so often by the Rangers of the North, you’ll find new Dúnedain, Hobbits, Scouts, and side quests. You’ll also find new ways to protect your heroes from damage, as well as the new Valour trigger, which continues to gain strength throughout the Angmar Awakened cycle. For over a decade, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game has brought players around the world on countless adventures through the fantastical realm of Middle-earth. Just one year ago, we released the Revised Core Set for this legendary game, allowing a wave of newcomers to join the veteran players of Fantasy Flight Games’ first cooperative Living Card Game.
