Her body was discovered two months later. However, her jewels were missing. Iorwerth was so distraught at her death and feared being accused of her murder, he hanged himself. His ghost is also believed to haunt the grounds, looking for his beloved Dorothy. Once the bodies had been carried down the Road of the Dead they'd be buried at the now-abandoned and overgrown graveyard near the river. Ghost stories are confused, with one 19th century ghost hunter saying that there was said to be a female ghost, but no one was able to explain who she was. I’ve heard another ghost story about the place: that the ghost is a member of the family from the 19th or early 20th Century who went mad at finding out her children had been killed in the Napoleonic/Crimean/First World War. This was one of my favourite ghost stories of Llanelli, but sadly I’ve heard one form or another of it connected with every big house in Llanelli. Stepney Mansion/Llanelly House

But, although the ghosts might sometimes prove annoying they are not in the least bit malevolent and those who work here seldom find them frightening. Indeed, aside from a ghostly voice that once screamed ‘Out, Out’ to an astonished visitor, the overall spirit of the place is convivial and few people fail to fall beneath its spell. Its name literally means ‘mansion in the meadow’ and the house certainly occupies a tranquil location, perched on a wooded hillside, high above the waters of Tremadog Bay and affording stunning views across the Snowdonia National Park. Their fame was noticed throughout the UK, and they would often host celebrities such as William Wordsworth, Lord Byron and Robert Southey. They rarely left Plas Newydd and when they did, they did not go far. Eleanor Butler died in 1829, and Sarah Ponsonby later died in 1831. Taff’s Well is Wales’ only thermal spring and is in the south of Rhondda Cynon Taf, close to its boundary with Cardiff. It’s the perfect place from which to visit the fairytale Castell Coch (which is surrounded by a huge spooky forest) or the beautiful Garth Mountain walk.

But the spirits of the past were also awakened. The builders, who set to work on the hollow shell of the old house, often saw the wraith of a young girl standing in a corner of the basement, apparently cooking. According to the book, Haunted Newport and the Valleys, by South Wales Paranormal Research (SWPR), there have been ghostly sightings since the 1920s. The woman appears from the swirls of mist and fog on the road beside them, thumbing down a lift. Kind souls who have stopped to help her watch her get in their car and then, as they drive, disappear completely.

As you can imagine in a place such as a jail there are many tormented souls still serving their time. One spirit is reported to be William Kerr who was an ex prison guard who went missing during his rounds one day without a trace. Is he trying to let people know what happened to him? This tour follows a circular route taking you along a mysterious and atmospheric wooded lane, the scene of many ghostly experiences, before following the riverbank where more ghostly encounters and legends are told. Located half an hour outside of Welshpool in north Wales is Penyfford Farm – a house once coined the ‘UK’s most haunted’. Over 300 paranormal occurrences have been reported at the location, including carvings on the walls, muffled voices in empty rooms, and the appearing figure of a pregnant girl. In the tiny blue painted work shed that perches precariously at the very edge of the cliff, he wrote what is perhaps his best known poem Do Not Go Gentle into that Goodnight. Tell me more: You might assume that the most-sighted spirit at Dylan Thomas' Boathouse would be that of the poet himself.

In 1780 an elderly spinster arrived at the soaring red sandstone walls of Powis Castle, where she hoped to earn a little money spinning hemp and flax for the household. The Earl and his family were away in London, but the steward and small detachment of servants seemed more than happy to give the old lady employment, and even offered her a free nights accommodation. The main occurrence that is reported by both staff and guests is the chatty nature of the entities in the Llancaiach Fawr. Voices are regularly heard talking one room ahead of the visitors, and when inspected, the voices change to the next room to always be one room ahead. There was an occurrence when a TV show was filming in the manor house, and a lot of the footage was unusable as loud talking could be heard over the presenter throughout the audio recordings. However, when filming, no voices could be heard. What the poor woman didn’t realise was that they intended to enjoy a little spooky sport at her expense, by putting her in a bedroom that was known to be haunted.

People have reported being touched/prodded and even pushed by an unseen entity throughout the house. Another common occurrence in the mansion is the sudden emotional changes. People are often overcome with anger, sadness, despair, and happiness. Conwy is a medieval coastal town filled with narrow streets, charming little shops and of course Conwy castle that towers over it all. However, in the middle of a bustling cobbled main street stands Plas Mawr an Elizabethan 16 th century townhouse. When Dylan died his widow Caitlin was unwilling to live in the boathouse, so his mother Florence became the tenant, staying until she died there in 1958. It is the ghost of Florence who is believed to haunt the house. Among the spooky happenings are: Another carving that appeared on the wall was the name of the Gower’s young son, Quinn, and as well as seeing a pregnant girl appear and disappear on the grounds of the farm, there was also a sighting of a hooded figure standing over the cot where Quinn was sleeping.

It was a vital area during World War I and II. People claim witnessing soldiers wandering through the woods and mutilated figures. Others claim falling over after feeling like someone was grasping at their ankles. A female spirit named Bridget wanders the jail looking for her child who also perished within the walls. A darker more mischievous energy also frequents the jail and is often seen. I, myself, have had my name whispered in my ear when alone in the jail. The condemned man’s cell is much less welcoming at night with a heavy atmosphere that would make even the most seasoned ghost hunter very uneasy. Whistling and faint moaning can be heard at the dead of night within the jails freezing halls. Other people have reported seeing a weird green mist and hearing children giggling. It is the ideal location for ghost-hunter brides and grooms to offer the wedding guests a frightening thrill. Roch Castle, HaverfordwestAs one of the oldest cities in the UK, it’s unsurprising that Chester has been the subject of several ghost sightings. One of the most talked about is a Roman soldier spotted wandering along the city walls. Built in 1435 the property has changed hands many times through its history. The house was used by two surgeons in Victorian times, then an ironmonger, girls school and also as a rectory. This may be why there are a plethora of ghosts and spirits who have chosen to stay in the building. Llancaiach Fawr manor house located in Nelson, Caerphilly is a popular tourist attraction for people who are interested in the paranormal. The manor was thought to have been built around 1530 and has been the scene of multiple ghostly occurrences.
