About this deal

The whole point of getting mechanical keyboards is that you can customize them to your heart’s content. What stood out to me from the data is how the graded-weight action of the Kawai MP11SE was heavier in the middle of the keyboard rather than the lowest end. I wonder if that's an anomaly in the particular keybed tested, or is reproducible across instruments? Very strange. I also wonder if the grand piano/seesaw-like design of the Kawai wooden key actions might feel different to the hands compared to the end-pivot designs of most other keybeds. Different inertia despite a similar touch weight, perhaps? I’m usually writing in Vim these days, so if you’re wondering why the escape key is used so much, it’s to exit ‘insert’ mode. Any developer wouldn’t be surprised to see delete and the arrow keys featuring heavily in my usage though — although Vim purists would berate me for not using h,j,k and l more!

How to choose the right key weight for your keyboard

Beyond the unavoidable differences found in every acoustic piano’s keyboard, some manufacturers add additional weight to the hammer heads and the keys themselves. They often do this by adding lead, which allows them to fine-tune the feel of the keys that make up their piano keyboard. Each manufacturer has a different approach and a different idea of what the right feel is. Dye-Sublimation, or ‘Dye-Sub’, as it is more commonly termed is a process where the markings are dyed into the plastic. Think of it like a tattoo for keycaps! I have discovered that rapidly freezing the substance with butane renders it very brittle. Enough that it instantly peeled off the rubber membrane with ease. It's interesting isn't it? Acoustic uprights tend to have lighter action because the strings and soundboard are vertical, so the hammers don't have to work against gravity. This is why people want the heavier grand action, to keep their fingers strong enough to play a Steinway or Bosey if needed or available. Raises the question: do people who practice on acoustic uprights have weaker hands than those practicing on grands? The way the keyboard feels to the player makes a difference in how they play it and, in turn, how the music sounds for the listener. The proper name for a piano is ‘pianoforte’ which translates to ‘soft-loud.’ The first being, I am not sure what kind of glue was used by Roland in the first place, and have no idea how it would react with the new resin (if at all). I'd hate to do all that work to find that it will fail again over time. With digital piano manufacturers, they will typically add weight to the keys to replicate a quality acoustic version’s responsiveness. Sounds Like an Acoustic Piano

keys are piano - Is it an issue if the white and black keys are

Although I've never noticed the key weights to matter, the action itself does. Pieces with rapidly repeated notes are much easier to play on the grand. Mechanical keyboards are enjoying a renaissance, which although has been going on for a number of years, is really starting to gain more widespread adoption since being embraced by the gaming community. Although they may not weigh as much when compared to other parts of the mechanical keyboard, they still increase the overall weight of the peripheral. Conclusion When it comes to case construction, the two common materials are aluminium or plastic. Like most choices, there isn’t a right or wrong, just a preference. Although wireless boards tend to be plastic to save weight and improve signal from the Bluetooth controllers. For those who get drawn into typography, it can become an obsession. The need to choose just the right font for a heading. The ability to spend hours pouring over the descenders of various ‘g’ glyphs. The endless marveling at the merits of Helvetica.

How much the PCB weighs on a mechanical keyboard might surprise you. This is because of all the components that are on this board. Just as every player will have personal preferences, every digital piano manufacturer has a different approach to making keyboards and a different idea of getting it just right. So, even though a player might play comfortably on weighted and unweighted keys, they might have trouble moving from a Korg to a Yamaha or vice versa.
