About this deal

This is not a downer of a book, however. Alexa, who is narrating, has some funny observations, and is curious about Ahmet, and wants to help him, to the point of trying to find a treat that he used to have in his homeland. I particularly liked how initially you were not sure whether you were reading from a boy or girls point of view. I was convinced we were reading about a girl. Others in the group thought it was a boy with Josie being their tomboy friend. Very clever of Rauf. Just finished this beautiful book with my 8 year old son, it is funny, extremely moving and thought provoking. We read it over several nights and I shed happy and sad tears! A wonderful read for children and adults alike Utterly delightful. Centres on the importance of friendship and encourages children not to fear those who are different.’ Mail On Sunday Writing outcomes:A piece of persuasive writing, free writing, a letter to the Prime Minister, the next part of the story, a news broadcast, a speech and a news feature

Ahmet, oh he was just such a wonderful character though I had some tears due to what he has experienced. His story was just so sad (though I had a laugh because of the innocence of the MC and her reactions to the story). I loved seeing him get more and more comfortable with his new environments, and how hard he was trying to learn English. I was happy to see him open up more and find his place in this new home. The second reading task is to write a recount of the events of playtime, from both of the character’s points of view, switching between them both.Everything changes for a group of nine year olds, when new boy comes to their class. As they find out later, Ahmet is Syrian refugee with heart-breaking experiences. They try to befriend him and help him as much as they can. And whoa, their adventures will become legendary. Please note that this is a World Book Day 2020 special which is no longer available to buy new and used copies may be hard to come by. This story is told from a child narrative, who wants to befriend with this new kid, Ahmet. Ahmet is from Syria and doesn’t speak English. There are theories and rumours and school bullies. They want to save their friend after knowing his heart-shattering story. Alexa makes it her mission to be a friend to Ahmet, and in doing so, she tries to find a way to help him find his parents. This resource is designed to help your ks2 class think about features of a newspaper report and is broken down into the following categories:

Amazing - i cannot tell you how amazing this resource is. Its my first year teaching and this has made the world of difference to me`! Thank you so much If you really want something, you have to keep trying for it. It's nice when adults tell kids the "truth about life," rather than keeping kids in the dark about world matters. The best books leave you with more questions than answers. The more questions you have, the smarter you'll be. You should never be really horrible to somebody who is horrible to you. Books are like people; if you look past their covers, they'll take you on a great adventure. Refugees don't just look for a home, they look for peace.

Book Club wise the children loved trying pomegranates. We learnt a few words in Kurdish and are all far more aware of the issues highlighted in the book. Above all though we enjoyed a really uplifting, positive story about a brave little boy and his fabulous friends. Heartwarming But in overall, this was a gorgeous book about refugees, finding a home to belong, feeling safe, friendship, and more. I would recommend it.

First, your class will draw a table like the one in the resource and complete each section with their different accounts of what has happened. One has been done as an example to show your Year 5 | Year 6 class. Unfortunately even though this book is extremely important and was really beautiful, I can't give a rating to it because of the author's attitude when it comes to trans people, especially trans women. This is a wonderful readalike to Wonder. I love the messages of having the courage to stand up to bullies and the importance of being an ally for people in need. ❤️❤️ I really liked this book because I never read a book about refugees before so that was new to me. I really liked the characters. They are super funny! I was really worried because there is this kid from Syria named Ahmet in third grade, just like me, but he doesn’t know English, lost his dad, lost his mom, his cat is dead AND no one knows what happened to his sister!
